New steering servo damages ESC?

I too installed a 5245 and burned it up. Then i installed another one. Everything was fine then I had the same issues as ghettofab. Trouble with the steering and throttle. lights flashing on the esc and rx. Started to smell that electrical burning so I shut it down but i was too late. Smoked the esc. I thought it might have been a short in the servo too. Well after that I pulled my Mamba 25 outa my scaler, picked up a 645 and so far no more problems. I did hear through the grape vine that there was an issue with the esc's. So much that Losi has sent out some replacements.
Glad to know I,m not the only one that,s happen too

Guess I'll find soon.Just sent my ESC back yesterday and my receiver. lock my 5245 up. Mine just went dead. when I unpluged my ESC from the receiver the ESC started flashing red. no power to the receiver at all.

I fitted a 5245 and it died in about 20minutes then i went back to my stock servo and the esc died shortly afterwards so i sent them both back and got replacements. after about 2 months of hassle free crawling the 5245 packed up and the esc started smoking so i turned it off. now if i plug a different servo in it just twitches and the rx starts flashing. however if i dissconnect the servo I can still drive forwards and backwards so i'm presuming that the esc is still ok???? i've just ordered a CC bec and will be fitting an ansmann 6kg servo when it arrives and will be hoping that the esc is ok??? if not then i'll be sending the esc back to losi again because IMO it shouldn't just give up like that!

i stipped the gears in my stock servo and while i was jacking around trying to strip them more it glitched and the esc never worked again lol :-( then i got a tekin fxr and as-2 metal toothed servo now thats not a issue at all lol ;-)

Looks like it was just the BEC that fried in the stock ESC. I added a CC BEC over the weekend to power the servo and RX and it all works fine again.

well i tried the 645 and stock ESC and ran it once and was very happy then the next day it started glitching bad and then stopped. i have steering but no forward or back. unplugged the servo and still nothing. i didnt see smoke but i assume i burnt it out. i like the stock ESC so i ordered a new one and a CC BEC. i will let you know if that worked. i might see if Losi will take a look at the ESC and if they replace or fix i will have a back up. fingers crossed cause i am missing some crawling and need a fix to my addiction.

If you're going to run the weaker stock ESC you really won't need the BEC.
The BEC is needed for servos that want to take more power than an ESC can provide, hence your fried ESC (assuming this is the case; did you try fresh batteries, just in case?). If you have already ordered the replacement ESC and the CC BEC and still have the 645, I recommend that you use the BEC programmed at 6.0v so you can safely get the most out of your 645 servo. Of course, you'll need the Castle Link to program the BEC unless you're having it preprogrammed or your LHS can do it for you.

Yeah, pretty sure as it just plugs in and everything else in the system is stock losi.

Kinda sounds like some of the losi ESCs have issues with the hi-tec digital servos. I checked the voltage coming out of the reciever + and -, which should be 6 volts, but mines showing 3.3 volts. So I'm pretty sure I fried the ESC.

Its looking like my cheapest alternative is a stock replacement ESC and then getting a 645mg.

Any reason I should look at an aftermarket ESC? I don't care to go lipo or brushless at this point.

I would go with a betetr esc myself,if money is real tight though, look at rpp hobby's site. They have a new ax10 esc takoff that is like 20 bucks.I would imagine it will surely handle more abuse, maybe even a little better brake?
I think that someone ran the stock axial esc on 6s at crawlapalooza too:ror:

I too have been running a 5245MG, ran it for 1 year - no problems, then puff - smoke from a burnt out ESC when bound up.
It seemed to only burn out the BEC circuit of the ESC though, I plugged in n external BEC (removed RED wire from ESC lead to RX) and it worked ok. I have replaced it with a new ESC to be sure.

(new rig, I run a full size Savox - with external BEC to be sure)

I think due to being bound up , the servo was running at full drain and put too much strain on the ESC.
For the small amount of cash a BEC runs to, its worth adding to your rig.

Just been reading up on these 5245 servos, seems it's not just you guys having problems.

Granted they aren't frying the esc in those cases, but it seems that if the end points aren't set correctly it jams up the servo, which is more than likely drawing to much current from the Esc.

Seems the weak point is a small cog driven by the motor pinion.

Hope that helps.

Cheers

is it really worth it?

ok now looking at all that,is the boost in steering performance worth the extra chedder?my stock servo my have crapped out im deciding whether or not i should upgrade. you upgrade the servo, the steering linkage(and make darn sure your end links are correct)upgrade the BEC,buy bigger servo mounts, you gotta upgrade the plastic knuckles because i know those are gonna wear out fast. now that its been a little while, are you happy with the upgrade? thanks everyone for keeping up with the post. lots of helpful information for newbies like myself.

Iight,
Matt

It's worth the upgrade if your wanting to comp your MRC.. but if ts more of a fun weekend crawler stock is okay.. But having the upgraded servo will be much more beneficial even if you are a weekend crawler

1. You don't really need up grade the links or the knuckles.. All I did was fuel tubing to replace the pivot ball and grease it so there wasn't any bind. Stock knuckles last awhile if your even comping, but not all power of the servo doesn't shine because the plastic will give alittle.

2. I personally am happy with my full servo buy, but instead of just buying the mount I would just buy a new chasis(only if you want to comp)
Reason why I am happy with my buy is because I don't need to use a servo saver. This way all the power can get sent to the linkage.

3. IMO, all you need is a: BEC, full size servo, servo mount, new mount if your still using the stock.
