The honeymoon is over, but/and these things are simply incredible. This is an old cliché in the audio world, but they are allowing me to hear things I've never heard before. And it's happening a lot. I can make out lyrics much better than ever and absolutely hear individual notes compared to blobs of notes in the most complex passages. Really amazing, really.

I recently found out I have a 5th gen iPod, I thought it was a 4th (hand me down from a friend). Supposedly it sounds better than the 4th gen, after the iMod work. I'm happy about that and also because of the retained headphone out having volume control still, but not happy about the additional line out cable cost because the caps don't fit inside.

Built a cabinet to hold all my gear, and put the RTR deck at a useful level. Fawkin thing weighs 50 pounds. Turntable is up on top.

Martin Logan Motion4 speakers. I haven't bought new speakers in 20 years so I was due :mrgreen: The old Mach 3's are subs now, driven by a Rotel 1070 on a 90Hz crossover.
 
Well well well, interesting choice coming from huge 1970 cabinet humungoids. Is that how you spell that? So, do the ML speakers sound good? Probably need a nice break in...

If equipment weighs 50 pounds, it usually sounds decent. :mrgreen:

I auditioned these against a couple B&W bookshelf models, and they came out on top. Do an A-B and the B&W's sounded muddy, the ML's have a great midrange and highs that even I can hear. By themselves they have okay bass, but throw a pair of 15" subs into the mix and the setup really comes to life.

I've had this RTR deck since 1989; serviced and aligned it a couple months ago and it sounds incredible.

Instead of listening to CD's, you're listening to music.

I have a pair of AX Pro's that are pretty nice. There are a lot of wires involved but the different inputs/outputs are nice. I use mine mostly for Xbox live gameplay and they sound great!
As for portable stuff I have some JVC marshmallows (they are cheap but not in sound quality) in the original corded version and some that are built in to a pair of bluetooth headphones...
If you don't like the earbuds Another fairly cheap but good sounding set of 'phones are Optimus pro 35's from radio shack (a rebrand of Koss headphones) I took a pair of these into a bose store and after some comparison I left knowing I made a good choice with the pro 35's.

I had some B&W 302s about 12 years ago that were great. Especially in near field listening. Really smooth and easy listening. Which helped with the cheaper crap electronics and awesome campus living home piece of shit yada yada.
 
And (Stu) what the hell kind of music do you have on reels?
 
Ive had a couple heavy audioaholic friends, one of them had his turn table mounted on a concrete colume that went down to bedrock, the turn table was on an air bearing, granite table with some kind of ruby needle or something like that. the whole system was tubed and analog. his biggest complaint was there is to good new media anymore unless your conneted in the music industry. i dont know wht they dont sell better digital files, hell the cd's hold 6 gigs now could be 6 times better quality. anways his system was playing the nicest jazz ive ever heard no doubt..
 
That's awesome. I usually put my turntable on 4 or 6 stacked cinderblocks (me be cheap obviously). Heavy is good, and solid.

Benz Ruby cartridge maybe, about $800, and quite nice.

There are some free downloadable hi rez 24/192 files (I think that's right) readily out there, but typically the user's equipment isn't up to the task of converting that stuff. The newest technology is needed, and even then the media is pretty limited.

I have a Sony SACD player, but there's nothing I care for on that format. Pretty much a let down, but the few things I do have on both SACD and CD, there is no comparison really.

Digital media is really coming around, but the record analog sound is still so good.

I've had my headphones on for about 7 hours now. :mrgreen:
