ATV tire purchase..........

Need to pick up tires for my Pug Badlands 4x4. I need a 27x12x12 size.

Something pretty agressive but the rig is not a performance machine by any means. :ror: No mud use, just yard work and trail type use. It will see lots of sand/dirt. Not much wheelspeed on tap either. Geared nice and low with about a 20 mph max speed.


Where should I be looking? Have been using Google to do a tire size search. Just not finding a good online store with much selection. Any suggestions? Would like to keep it to 100 bucks or less per tire shipped.

I'm running 28'' ITP Mud lites on my Foreman with ITP wheels. I love the tires and wheels but in reverse the Mud lites suck.

mud lites are pretty good, but i have ran swap foxes too but i think the mud lites do a lot better at slower speeds

These are what they came with from the factory:
Carlisle HD Field Trax or paddles were also an option.

I run the Field Trax's on my 6x4 and some stryker II's on my Workhorse.

You should be able to find more mild tires in the original 26" size if you don't want the super aggressive stuff.

DO NOT GET MUDLITES. they will probably not clean out in 20mph, i have them on my honda recon, they dont do too well unless they are slinging pretty good

may be a little to aggressive for your application but good tires.
not sure on a price though, never sold any around the sizes your're looking for.

Bighorns or Swamp Lites, IMO. Stay away from Swamp Fox's..... they're shit. I run Bighorns on my ATV and love them. A buddy runs Swamp Lites and they're pretty decent.
Another tire you can look at are Duro Power Grips. Same tread pattern as a Bighorn, but cheaper price wise. My wife had them on her ATV and they did great. I don't know if they come in the size you're looking for, though.

I'm thinking just some Maxxis Razrs would be all you'd need. They're deep lug and work great.

Of the tires listed by the OP, excavators, mud sharks or whatever the first two are suck bad, not really good at anything. Mudlite's (which by the way suck at mud) are good in sand but puncture and bust beads easy. The bearclaws are probably best of the bunch.

Of the others mentioned: The Swamplites are a strong tire, but aren't all that in sand. Bighorns would be good in sand, but cost a lot more and aren't as agressive as the Bearclaws. Swamp Foxes are pretty much a mudlite copy. Razr's ?????, maybe a Razr4 but no.

My choice (with the bearclaws a close second, bighorns coming in third) would be a Maxxis Mudbug, great sand tire, won't puncture and will hold a bead even without air. I only run 1 psi in my 27-12-12 bugs. Here's a couple pics of my heavy AC loaded down with rock in sand, I run down the river (all sand bottom) and grab new stuff for my rockpile all the time. Seems like they've went up about $25 per tire in the last two years as most tires have though.

Have you even tried the Swamp Lites? I ran them on my AC in the DESERT for nearly 2 years w/o issue.

They are a great tire.

I like the looks of them but I figured they would be too soft and puncture prone for lava rock and sage brush....What size are you running?

I love the Big Horns! I almost picked up a set, but then I found the Swamp Lites. I'm running 27's, ran them in the desert and never had a flat. They are 6 ply and tough as nails.

Just what I wanted.......keep em coming. I am probably overthinking the decision, anything would be worlds better than the worn out turf tires that are on it. :ror:


All my exp is with 2 wheels not 4 so I just don't know what all is out there and whether it works or not.

One thing I did not mention is the fact that the rig is 1500 pounds dry. It is capable of carrying a ton of payload, although I will never have that much in it.

I found these, they don't have 27's but they do have 26x12x12, and they look like what you might be searching for. $285.98 for 4, 4ply tires. I don't know if this is a good deal or not.
