I have been searching for days and have not cone up with much, so maybe this will get some of what I'm looking for. I have been wanting to build a transfer case but can't find any build threads on it or many pictures of some. So if you could post a picture of your home built transfer case and a little detail about it that would be sweet. Thanks. "thumbsup"

i found this picture a few weeks ago since i was wanting to build my own transfer case but never got around to it.

looks like he only used some aluminum plate with 5mm rod and .8mod gears with the 5mm shaft size??

hope that helps

im in the process of building the same. my question is how did he keep the pinions from rubbing the alum plate. ie the bearing holes would have to be machined recesses.

I made my own a few years ago (I gotta finish that truck someday!)

Here's a link with some pics. It's made with an old Stampede gear...if I was to do it again, it would be smaller with a better quality set of bearings.

In the picture above, it looks like he is using flanged bearings pressed in from the inside. I assume he has the gears touching the inner race which keeps them off of the aluminum plates.

Metal Masher has an old thread for his crumple bodies flat fender jeep, he built a super stout T-case out of loose gears and shafts.

man those flanged bearings are pricy! $10-12 each.
for a 3 gear case thats $60+ bucks in just bearings
and the 5mm pinions are $10-12 each as well.

So just drill 2 holes and use 2 plates and non flanged bearings.. first plate drill and ream for 11mm, plate 2 drill and ream for 5mm..

I think without some spacers on that one in the pic it would also have rotation issue's and gears coming out of mesh.. nothing really there to keep it from twisting.. add in some spacers and it would probably work much better..

I bought some flanged bearing at mcmastercarr when I built my reduction tranny for my 5 ton and they were a good price.cant remember what I paid, but it didnt seem crazy to me at the time. Then I used some pinions and spurs to get it to end where I needed it. I also ordered some stainless rod from them for shafts, and I just used some brass washers between the gears and the housing to keep it from rubbing.
