With Christmas a few days away, I was remembering my first hobby-level RC vehicle. It was an original Tamiya Stadium Blitzer that my dad bought me. It came as a kit, and I think I was around 12 at the time. The hobby store package also came with a Futaba radio, and my generous dad even sprung for a Novak ESC (in my ignorance I had picked a forward-only ESC ).

I was so excited, and after opening the box I sat at the dining room table literally all day and assembled the truck. It was dark out when I finished, but I still went out and drove around the street for a while.

That truck is a fun and fond memory. I wondered if anyone else wanted to share a story about their first RC?

Merry Christmas!

Mine was the original tamiya blackfoot - followed by a traxxas hawk2.

My 1st "real RC car" was a Bolink 10th scale onroad car, ~1979?? that was used.
Soon after it was an Associated RC-12e (IIRC). Both used a resistor & servo for speed control......solid state ESC's really wern't out yet....

I still have the RC-12e, as well as an "I" & "L". The 12e still has the resistor speed control in it. I keep joking with the local carpet guys we should do a vintage class.

Yes, it's been fun."thumbsup"

I started with a Heng Long Mad Truck, POS. So right after that prolly like 80% of guys in the rc hobby, I picked up a Tmaxx. 50+ rigs since then.

This was my first, a Nikko Thunderbolt. It was slow (380 motor) but it would run for like a half an hour. I LOVED this thing, I still do. so many fond memories of this little buggy. All was good untill my buddy got a Golden Arrow that had a 540 in it. Then it was on. I begged and begged untill My dad bought me a RC10 gold pan. I've been hooked ever since.

My first real RC was a Tamiya Clodbuster , this was when the Clodbuster was new ! I am old lol
I remember building that kit , and still today , the build is one of the fun parts of RC .

Thanks everyone for your replies. This is fun. A lot of these rigs I remember seeing in RC Car Action or at the local hobby store when I was younger. I agree about the build - what an exciting time.

Mine was the lunchbox. I was 11 it was christmas morning I was expecting a new rc thinking another nikko buggy but when I saw the huge box I knew it was something good. I ripped the paper off and wow I had never even saw a real rc. When I opened the box and saw a million screws and parts I thought uhhh now what. I'm pretty sure step dad thought the same. I remember throwin a fit cause I wanted to put it together but we had dinners an all that stuff. Well after about three days of moms kitchen table being the work bench it was done. I've never looked at another toy rc again. Mom thinks its weird that a 32 year old still plays with toys. I tell her its her fault haha.
MERRY CHRISTMAS everybody. Maybe she will put a wraith undwr the tree this year.

I love it man! I am also 32. I've been off-and-on with RC's ever since getting that Stadium Blitzer 20 or so years ago, but every time I sell my gear I eventually come back and buy more. Just can't shake it! There is currently a used Axial AX-10 en route to my house.

A local TV station did a segment on a nearby RC club once, and one of the guys they interviewed said that RC cars are more like small versions of real race cars than they are like toy cars, due to all the adjustments, fine tuning, and modifications the owner can do to the vehicle. I don't know how many people would believe that, but I'm on board with the idea "thumbsup"

Wow that was a long long time ago. It was 1986 or 87. I had all but spelled out Kyosho to my parents for a name brand for a buggy. I don't think the Kyosho ultima had been released yet. I don't even remember the brand on the kit. What I do remember was this.

1) it was my first rc car
2) chain driven 4x4
3) four wheel steering
5) Rear Susp. like a Tamiya grasshopper.
4) Nightmare

I built it up and got it running but it would never go in a straight line. I knew the guy at the LHS had sweet talked my parents in to buying it because it had been on his shelves forever. There were no spare parts for it. No hop ups for it. I ran it for about six months and then the chassis broke. After that I bought a Tamiya Avante. I loved that car. So there's the story. If anyone can think of that car from 85-87 that I'm talking about I'd love to know what it was.

Well I had lots of Tyco rc cars first but I'd say the car that was really the gateway into the hobby grade stuff was my Radio Shack Red Arrow. Had that thing for a long time, drove it till the tires were bald and then saved my money and got a MRC MT-10S. It's been about 16 years since then and it's only gotten worse. Owned quite a few different ones till now, I have 3 crawlers, 2 trucks, 2 trailers, a TC3, 2 boats, and a heli. I have to say I've loved every minute of it though.
