Saw "American Weed" today on Nat Geo. It "highlighted" legal growing in Fort Collins and how this has alledgedly affected the locals. I know there are several folks on here from Colorado so I'd like to hear your thoughts and experiences with this issue. In fact I'd like to hear from everyone who has an opinion.

I lived in Colotado Springs in 2009 and don't recall anything about this then so I'm guessing it's fairly new. Correct me if I'm wrong. Was it voted down?

I have some concerns about the gateway possibility. I'm living proof of that but know it ultimately depends on who you hang with.

Thoughts?

I live in ft collins, yes they voted it down but not completely or there was a loophole or something. We actually have someone growing in the unit behind my shop, I think they grow for a dispensary because they haven't slowed down at all. It's kind of annoying since it's effecting our business, come back from lunch and the shop smells like we're the ones growing. I don't smoke at all and really don't care if they're growing or not (everyone's gotta make a buck) but when our customers walk in and smell it, it reflects poorly on us.

Put up a sign

If you smell pot
it's the shop behind us.

Interesting point. One would think the growers would be "out in the country".

Banning shit doesn't work
its hypocritical to allow alcohol and not weed.

I don't believe Portugal is a good comparison to the US and could happen here.

(i live in sw colorado, we have 6-7 dispensaries in town) pot is legal for medicinal purposes in the state of colorado. you have to have a prescription from a real Dr. and buy your weed from a licensed, regulated shop. Growers can grow off site for a dispensary, but there are limits on the # of plants in relation to the # of registered patients. From the info in the local press they are actually being more heavily regulated than a pharmacy here. They are required to register, have security cameras, be more than 1000' feet from a school, employes are finger printed, and back ground checks are done, etc. Mean while walgreens is across the street from the high school, and kids are selling their mom's oxy out back;-)

Knarly, I wil have to read some more.

I agree with some of the mentioned hypocracy relating to "drugs"....a lot is determined in context (is it prescribed????.....So...it was "OK" for Michael Jackson to drug to death because he had a Dr's note but another person is arrested because he was burning mother nature??!!):cry:

As to pot or other things leading to harder stuff......welllll......it depends. A weak person may go down the wrong road regardless of where started, a stronger person may start anywhere and not go further.
Just saying since I have seen both types.

Side note....I always sorta wanted to be part of the group that had to burn confiscated pot........LOL.....

Point taken. I used to hang with a wild crowd where ANYTHING was ok. I never stuck needles in my arm but know a few that did. Some have survived. Some have not.

I don't have an answer but am curious how others look at this especially those in Colorado since i lived there recently. I don't remember pot being legal when I was there in '09. It wouldn't have mattered because I no longer partake but the legality issue is curious to me. On it's own I believe pot to be harmless, however...(and this is where I go blank).

if you wanna talk gateway i,ll wager you tried a beer before anything else..i dont know that but its pretty likely for most
prohibition does not and will never work
the whole "gateway" thing is bullshit anyway..a person is inclined that way or they arent..i guess air is the real bad gateway drug, once someone starts breathing no tellin what they may try..lol

Yep, but the drinking age for beer and wine was 18 then. You make a good point.
In NJ.....I was riding the "grandfathered" wave......after I hit 18, they raised the legal drinking age, but I was "grandfathered in" since I was already legally drinking..........(yes, if you search you could figure out my age......it's not young.....but not old either:shock::lmao::lmao:)

The scary thing about all these dispensaries is that no matter which way you look at it, they're still breaking federal laws. Yes they're regulated, limited and "legal" in Colorado, but only to a point. This being especially true with what recently happened concerning them.

Because they are still working illegally, banks have started refusing their business. This means no checks cashed, cash deposited, credit cards processed, etc. If i remember right, this was in fear of federal charges of money laundering to some degree being brought against the banks serving them.

This means that every single dispensary here is now working on a cash basis with it being stored either on-premises or elsewhere. There is no way, aside from honesty, to regulate these businesses with any accuracy with cash basis sales. I haven't heard of anything yet, but I'm sure robberies, theft and hijackings of these places and their owners will increase as time goes on.

Personally, I don't care if these places succeed or fail as I don't smoke, but these places were essentially given a green light for legal drug dealing.

That's another thing as well. If you've been a smoker for a long time and acquired it through your sources illegally, why would you go and get your name down on paper saying you are breaking federal law? If any federal agency wanted to eradicate pot usage again, they now have a gigantic list of users who are just about guaranteed to have something on their person.

If it were me and I was a smoker, I'd just go about acquiring my supplies how I always had. No paperwork required.

Few more than $.02.
