JHTreyIII's Class 1 Build - 1981 Chevy Pickup

Re: JHTreyIII's Clod Buster Build

The 2 tone paint job would look nice . 8)

Yeah it really would. I'm still undecided at the moment. There's a guy on here with a white crew cab that is just unbelievable...that one is really making me lean toward the white. I think his thread is called 'my three bowties'.

Re: JHTreyIII's Clod Buster Build

Coming along nicely Trey.. You could ask Mega Fattie if he would do a paint job on it for you"thumbsup"

Re: JHTreyIII's Clod Buster Build

Oh yeah.. I'm sure he'll do it. He might "accidentally" hear pink when you tell him white but, he'll probably do it.:lmao:

Re: JHTreyIII's Clod Buster Build

So I got the axles mounted up tonight. They went on really easy and covered all of that ugly spot where I shaved off the shock mounts. So now I've run into a couple issues I'll have to figure out:

1. The MIP drive shafts I have, which are for an SCX are a little too long. I need to do a little research first but I may try to shorten them, it doesn't look like it would be too difficult. I'd have to cut a 1/4" off the male end and then grind down the thicker part of the same male end to allow the female end to slide over it further. Its either that or find shorter drive shafts.

2. The steering link mounts on the VP knuckles are too wide. They must be designed to be used with a wheel with a wide offset. They're hitting the tire with my SCX wheels used as a mockup. There's no way I can afford to go any wider since I'm shooting for a class one here. I'm going to have to get some axial chubs and knuckles. The height of the arm also appears that it might cause contact between the steering linkage and the leaf springs.

Other than that, it's starting to look like something. Got my losi mini crawler shocks mocked up. Still need to figure out exactly how to mount them and fill them with oil. Also stuck my 16T Crawlmaster in there just to see how it fit...like a glove!

Here's the front end mock up, you can see the knuckle arms.

Here's the rear. The shocks look nice back there with that little bit of angle to them.

And a quick shot of the tranny & motor.

Just an overall picture because yesterday's photos were a little close up and hard to see the progress.

Lookin' good"thumbsup"

did the outputs and that driveshaft come with the chassis?

The driveshaft and the transfer case came with the chassis. The output from the Axial transmission is just your normal output...so it still has one sticking out the front as well. I've just got one of those solid Robinson ones in there.

Re: JHTreyIII's Clod Buster Build

Duh.. yeah I know all that! I was talking about the dogbone and the cups.. did that come with the chassis too? I like that setup.. pretty cool. I might have to come up with something like that for the trans to transfercase connection"thumbsup"

Re: JHTreyIII's Clod Buster Build

Oh, I thought outputs meant the gear with the 'output' shaft to connect to. Yeah the cups and dog bone came with the chassis. It's pretty beefy too, it's like 3/16" rod.

Re: JHTreyIII's Clod Buster Build

freaking awesome... makes me want to ditch the tf2.

i was really impressed with neils jk with what i think was the crosscanyon chassis. top notch thinking and quality.

Re: JHTreyIII's Clod Buster Build

Ha, thanks! Yeah I've been really impressed with the chassis so far. This one is taking me a little while. I'm having to feel my way through parts and pieces as I go.

Re: JHTreyIII's Clod Buster Build

Good looking build. I really like the GCM setups. If I ever build up a Class 1 type truck it will be with the 4TEN chassis. Kinda pricey but worth it, IMO.
My Cross Canyon didn't come with the traxxas output cups or dog bones. You say the 4TEN does?

I ran the Cross Canyon Chassis on 2.2 JK and it was a slick setup.

Thanks man! Yes, the 4TEN came with the output cups and dogbone. Nice rig you got there!

Re: JHTreyIII's Clod Buster Build

Okay so I think I've figured out my driveshaft length issue. I have the MIP's for the SCX10 but they're too long. I can cut them but I was worried that since I was going to have to cut 1/2" or so that I'd loose too much contact in the spline. Probably not an issue on a class 1 rig but you never know, this thing has some beef to it. It appears that the MIP setup for an AX10 with dig has a nice short rear driveshaft that may work for my application. I was able to order from MIP the two male shafts that I need only. The female portion of the short shaft has the very same part number as the femal part of the SCX10 so that part I can reuse along with everything else. In the end these are going to be some pricey drive shafts but it sounds like they'll work this way with no modification.

Re: JHTreyIII's Clod Buster Build

Got new shoes in the mail today! These are the RC4WD 1.9 Baja Claws that are 4.19" tall and the X2SS compound. I went with a set of honcho wheels I already had. I really like these wheels. I was hoping to find a use for them again. They just don't look right on my '72 Chevy. Set the body on for a few photos.

Couple more:

I got my new fender flares in. They'll cover enough of the tire to pass the class 1 inspection. They're the same width that I used on my '72 Chevy here:

And check out all that room for the drop bed...its almost time for me to start figuring out body mount height, etc so I can get a depth for the bed.

Re: JHTreyIII's Clod Buster Build

Well I didn't get too much done here this weekend...working on packing the house for the move and had to put a new stereo in my truck. The factory one died.

I did get the chubs and knuckles switch out though. The axial ones fit much better.

Before (and touching the tires):

And after (much better):

Re: JHTreyIII's Clod Buster Build

did that grill come without that stupid looking 4x4x4?

I found a complete new/old stock Clod Buster body. This body was made in 1987, it has the copyright Tamiya 1987 on the bottom of it but it's brand new (well 25 years old but never used). Here are a couple shots from the seller:

This is my first ground up build without using a kit of parts. SUPER excited about this one. "thumbsup"

One thing I'm going to have to teach myself on this one is how to do styrene body work and filler, etc. That's something I haven't tried yet. The engine in the hood will need to be filled in along with the sun roof. I also want to do a full drop bed so that will require a little bit of work. I also need to make or find a clear windshield. I want to put an interior in this guy and the smoked windsheld won't look right.
