Bulldog's Screamin 2 Southern Buggy

Well, the cvd steering didn't work out. Everything mounted perfectly and I had just enough play for the suspension to cycle. The problem was that the cvd had just enough slop in the joints that when mounted up, it gave about a 1/4" of play in the steering servo. Couple that with the tire throw and it was a big sloppy mess.

Back to the drawing board. I revisited the cms setup and instead of using the vp cms in the direction it is meant, I flipped and rotated it. On to the pics.

Here is the panhard and cms all mounted. I need to shorten the panhard link a little. You can see a little extension I put on the panhard axle mount to test.

Then, to answer the steering drag link problem, I relocated the drag link with a bend in it to behind the axle. It just clears the shock even with turning the knuckles. The shocks I'll be running will be smaller as well. These are just for mockup. Once I shorten the panhard link, I'll mount it back in the axle mount like it's supposed to.

Here's how I mounted the vp cms to the chassis. You can see that had I used the bracket the way it would mount on the wraith, it would be in the way of all the tubework. I'm very pleased with how it turned out. When it's all said and done, I'll build a styrene motor to cover the servo.

Thanks for looking. "thumbsup"

Quick update.

I finished up some tubework and reworked some things that were bugging me. Here's some pics.

I cut down the rear duck tail portions and tucked them in. Much better.

Many many tubes to go. But it's getting there!

Thanks for looking. May have some updates this weekend. I'd love to knock out the chassis soon. "thumbsup"

Oh, I'm not taking my time. My time is taking me. I'm not looking forward to all the little cripple tubes, but I think I have a method to making it quicker. I really need to find a local sandblaster to blast it. Things are getting tight. I had to take a little creative license on some of the tubework. Not perfectly scale, but I had to work on the fly to make things work. It's a delicate balance between getting it right, and working with what you've already got.

Loking goid, i had the same idea with the steering and scrubbed it just like you did. But on that note, i do have a sure fire fix. I am working and a few more prototypes and deside ehich is better. This will involve some machined parts and most likely will be on my next venture in 2.2
A genuine working steering system that can bolt up.

Norm,
I considered almost every option to figure the scale steering out. Rack and pinion, cables, springs, even servo behind the axle (got pretty close on that one), luckily after staring at it long enough, I worked it out with the cms. If you have a system, the forum is willing and waiting. Once someone nails it, we'll all be in steering heaven! If you nail it, throw a link in your ongoing threads. I'd love to see what you come up with. "thumbsup"

Finally got some time to burn my fingers on the buggy!

I was dreading the little tubes...and they didn't dissappoint me. I found a few tricks and once I got some momentum, it went well. I use a dremel with a 1/4" diamond bit to make the bird's mouths. I had to do everything with a set of needle nose pliers, and then quench them in water because of the temperatures. Then blow them off with compressed air.
Here are some pictures.
The rear section.

This is an example of some of the ridiculously little tubes I needed.

The really challenging part about this build is everything is either curved or on an angle. No straight lines to be found.
DSC_0818.jpg

Don't count the bottom tubes!
DSC_0820.jpg

It's coming together...kinda like a beautiful disaster! The hardest part is over!

Surprise surprise, when I flipped the chassis over, I found some holidays in the brazing. I'll chalk that up to being in a rush. I hope I don't get fired.

Thanks guys. As for the color, I'm stuck. I thought about the original moonrover silver and black, because that's what I fell in love with first, but then I thought I'd give it my own spin with black, silver and electric blue like my dually. Although I'm trying to keep it scale, I'm not shooting for a 100% replica. Time will tell. When I get close to colors, I'll post up and get some thoughts. For now, I just want to finish the chassis. Hopefully I can get an update later this week. Thanks for looking. 8)

Your patience level just went up a few notches.

As for the paint, I would say to paint the tube work blue, like the truck color. That color would really show it off.

The other colors can be easily incorporated into the build.

Woo hoo!

The tubework is done. i've got to get a few things cleaned up and then get it sandblasted. Anyone know of a sandblaster in the San Diego area. PM me if you do!

Tube work should definitely be the focus, so it should be the electric blue. Leave the black or white to be used for accent colors.

Looks awesome.
