What about chopping a couple coils off these springs? retain the rate, drop the height?



I like the idea of making two bumpers. Make the legal one simple and just enough to make width, and the real one for non-comps the way you want it to look.

Cutting the springs is certainly an option. If need be, I'll definitely consider doing that. "thumbsup"

I'm rather torn on the idea of making 2 bumpers. I think I'd rather put more effort into designing a nice looking and legal C1 bumper and just leave it on there. But we'll see... If I don't 100% love the bumper, I may make a little stubby bumper for get-togethers. :mrgreen:

That C1 bumper rule may have to be looked at again for 2014. I know it's been discussed, but to me, the "jeep" type vehicles are not the same body type as a pick-up or SUV. There are all kinds of 1:1 aftermarket front bumpers for "street driven" Jeeps that would not pass in C1. For example, if you wanted to build a scale replica of this TJ....


It is obvious it is a daily driver, but yet has a stubby winch bumper. Just an observation.:mrgreen: Sorry for mucking up your build Tommy. Keep up the great work!

LOL! I actually don't have to look beyond my garage to see a daily driven TJ with a stubby bumper with a winch mount. :ror: But I understand the reasoning behind the rules. The committee (which I've retired from, BTW) needs to make the rules so no rigs have a significant advantage. My Jeep won't look as good, but that's okay. I think the rule is still a good thing. Could you do a bumper like the rampage front bumper for the jk. Its legal width but gives you better clearance like a stubby one would. Maybe even make it out of tube?

Well I didn't have a picture of your TJ handy, so that was the next best thing.:lmao:

I get the rule, I just look at it from the appearance aspect, and what you choose to build. And really don't see a huge advantage over a stubby Jeep bumper or something like this.....

Got the front bumper started and winch mounted.

Of course, it was after I did all the work (more than you might think) when I realized it was angled down a bit too far. This pic exaggerated it, though. It's not quite that bad. Now to build some tube work around it....and to protect that fancy winch. :mrgreen:

Thanks, fellas! I'm pretty pleased with it. I also got my radio set up to control both winches. Now I'm waiting on some Shoe Goo to dry to see if my rear winch line routing will hold up. Should know by tomorrow.

So front and rear bumpers are done. Front and rear winches are pretty much done. I guess next up will be rock sliders, wiring the electronics, and maybe build some body armor. It's coming along....

I JB Welded the brake line routing to the servo case. VERY limited space, but this is holding up very well! Pretty pleased with it.....but very happy it won't be seen normally. :ror:

I did another trail run yesterday. Overall, the Jeep performed well. I'm not sure I like those King shocks more than the stockers, though. They're actually too soft. I'm going to try much heavier shock oil to see if that'll help get the front a bit more stable. But I really wish I wouldn't abuse my rigs before they're even completed! The Jeep took a ton of big rolls yesterday....in some cases barrel rolling a good 10' down a rocky hill. I ended up breaking off both side mirrors. :evil: On the bright side, the cage held super strong and the magnets held the body in check perfectly! :mrgreen: And absolutely no failures during our 2+ hour long run. I even got to check out the CLAW winch and it worked like a charm!

When I run a servo winch in my crawlers (90% of the time). I run the bobbin set up and personally have never had an issue with it. Maybe your doing something wonky?

Holding up great! In fact, this is like the 3rd rig this winch has been on. No complaints....even with an 11 lb. truck!
