Wheelbase vs trailing arm length

Glad to help! My two most important goals when building any rig are reliability and performance and Axial's WBHD and Traxxas Maxx shafts have never let me down. The only reason I tried Maxx shafts in the first place was because I had seen someone run a set here on RCC and I just wanted to try something for comparison sake. Maxx shafts are beefier and stay quieter longer than WBHDs but don't always clear suspension components. That's how I decide which to run, Maxx shafts when there's plenty of room, WBHDs when things are tight like the stock Bomber front end.

Here's a comparison shot just for informational purposes. WBHD on the right, Traxxas Maxx shaft in the middle, and a hybrid Summit/Revo axle shaft on the left built by SuperShafty. I tried the hybrid shaft on my go fast Bomber but it wobbled too much because the inner diameter of the yokes are better suited for 6mm outputs. That would've been no problem on the trans side but the 5mm pinion shaft would've still been an issue. So now I just stick with WBHDs and Maxx shafts when I have enough clearance.

That maxx shaft looks nice. This may be a dumb question but I'm not too familiar with the traxxas rigs, is it just called a maxx shaft or is it off a specific one like e maxx or t maxx?

Sorry, I always forget to put part numbers. Yes, they are the long HD half shafts from a T Maxx and you'll need 2 part numbers for a complete front and rear setup. TRA4951x and TRA4928x. You'll just need 1 package of 4951x and 2 packages of 4928x. They come with set screws and everything to make complete shafts. All you'll need to do is grab a drill and a 5mm or just a hair bigger drill bit to ream out the keyed flat spots on the yokes. Voilà, less than $20 gets you some pretty darn tough driveshafts that are lightweight, easily trimmed to fit, and stay silent after many hours of use. I think they look good too with the universal joint as opposed to a CV ball and socket.

I'm testing out the twin hammers trailing arms. I definitely like the better steering. I also put softer springs on the front for crawlability. But now it's much harder to control at speed. Has anyone figured out a way to run the stock sway bar with TH trailing arms?

I tried the dlux one in these configurations with twin hammer length TAs.

This was too stiff for crawling I thought but could rail the dirt great.

This wasn't a while lot different that without with the leverage and the poor angle on the links but might work better with a stiffer bar.

Anybody reliably figured anything out. I have the vanquish twin hammers trailing arms and am not to fond with any real wheel speed. Kinda wish I would have went with wraith length.

Custom links about wraith length. No trailing arms. Mounted shocks on axle. Moving shocks back on axle stiffened it up and sway bar isnt needed. I am very happy with it. Crawls well and still a blast at speed.

Changing wheelbase will allways affect handling. Generally shorter wheelbase will increase turning abilities and decrease stability at speed. Widening or narrowing track width will also affect handling at speed, not just sideways stabilitiy. It's all give and take, you can't have it all.

I've got vanquish twin hammers arms for anybody wanting to swap or buy. Think I prefer wraith length.

After a drive in the woods with mine I realized the stock wheelbase is, indeed too large. I want to shorten my wheelbase, but I'm lazy. :lmao:

So with a stock axle, if I wanted twin hammer trailing arms, what uppers would I use?

Traxxas 5318...or is there any better choices?

The more Crawling I do, the less I like the stock length arms.

Also, to add, I have MIP Super Shafty drive shafts. I assume they will now be to long with the shorter rears?

I have the wraith length TAs and VP sway bar....the stock VP links make a crazy angle with the wraith length TAs. I am getting more torque twist that before.

So nobody?

For the same reason you are asking these questions, I went with Wraith length trailing arms since you can get bolt on Wraith length drive shafts and upper links. If you go with Twin Hammer length, you will need custom solutions.

For the upper links, the Traxxas you stated is the only bolt on solution I have heard of. There is plenty of discussion in this thread on what the dimensions need to be.

For the drive shaft, I have read some people chop up an Axial WB shaft to the desired length.

Yep, that's what I did when I changed the trailing arms on my Bomber to a solid link setup.
The WB HD shafts are a great shaft, super strong, lightweight and easy to cut down for a custom length.

I pulled my 12.3"wb MIP's off my scx10 and transplanted it into the bomber with twin hammers length TA's. Works just fine.
