Oh dear. I've gone and done it now.

I went to my local hobby shop and pre-ordered this TRX the moment it was announced, mainly because I wanted to see how it stood up to the gold standard (in my opinion) the SCX10II. I'm putting together a video review that will better describe my thoughts, but succinctly, the TRX is a good first entry from the fastest name in radio control. And that's exactly the problem. It's too fast, it's got too many gimmicky features and no aftermarket support (yet).

I like my trucks simple and easy to work on, and I don't feel like this is ever going to be that. With four servos, a two speed transmission, portal axles, lockable diffs, there's just too much here that is going to fail over time. Sigh. Sometimes there's too many things.

There's definitely innovation - I like the concept of portals - but Traxxas wasn't first here. Gmade did it years ago with the R1 and MadMoose nailed it with their Volvo axles. They're cool, and I've always been a fan. BUT, I have a theory as to why Traxxas went with them beyond the lack of torque twist and clearance a portal provides. I think that they couldn't get the gear reduction low enough and needed to further reduce at the axle to get a low speed out of the transmission they designed (to go fast).

Speaking of the trans, I can do without a two speed altogether. Who needs that in a crawler, honestly? A great brushless system will give plenty of wheel speed if needed. And with this, goes the locking/unlocking differentials. Again, interesting, but not really necessary for me in a crawler. Just another thing that will require maintenance and prone to failure.

These are all my first impressions without much drive time, and who knows, I might change my mind about some or all of these once I've had more time with it.

I really like the included body. Nice and thick lexan and tons of plastic add-on details like rollcage, grille, hi-lift jack, gas cans, etc.

Inner fenders! Hooray! Someone finally included them. A great feature.

You can see that I've already added a couple small changes, including Vanquish 1.9 KMC Bully's, Pro-Line Krawler T/A's with CI foams, wipers, and some stripes. There'll be more to come as I goof with it.

Bottom line, I think it's got potential, but it'll be challenging to have it do the things I want it to.

Looks good Matt! I too am on the fence about purchasing one. I have to agree that all the little features are nice but I see fail points and increased maintenance with them.

I can't believe how simple mods like your choice of wheels, tires, and that cool, grey stripe really improved the look of the truck. It looks great as-is, but I'm anxious to see what you do with it.

looks great.
try the cruise control feature.
sorta like walking your dog. heel TRX4 heel boy.
never thought i'd like it but now i use that feature a lot....

We'll see how it holds up. I'm sure that with my light touch it'll be fine. Definitely more fail points and I am nervous about that. I guess they had to go as far as possible to enter the market with a bang.

Good points for sure.

Did you run the stock tires? Or went straight to the new wheels tires?

I ran the stock tires back when I tried it out in June. Wasn't impressed then. Foams are too soft for my liking.

Interior...... how will it work on stock body?
Clear repl body's will be available for windshield .

Hang up and Drive

I doubt you could get full interior with the body and chassis as-is. I know Bowhouse is offering a better battery location modification and that might help. Yeah, I know they're offering a clear body but how hard would it have been to do clear windows from the start?

Thanks, hopefully going to do some fun stuff with it.

Yeah, I touch on that feature in the video review. I could see myself using it for filming.

that looks killer I even like the grey strip.

I like the 2spd for the run out of a many trails its more flat and open and maybe nothing to crawl on until further down I'll go into high gear. It can go walking speed though in low gear but things are spinning fast. its like the advantage of a transfer case/lowrange in 1:1. with a nice brushless motor though you could get more out of 1st gear I bet without messing with gearing or anything. I would say try it out before you change anything but you've got like 2,000posts and you probably already know what to expect lol. I mean that really not sarcasm :p
Your right about the inner fenders they keep a lot of dirt out and you don't have to make your own!

I thought the locking diffs were gimmicky at first, until I had a chance to use them. Really nice to be able to unlock for super tight corners....

There's positives in every truck. 2 Speed is not necessary. If it goes faster than I can walk, what the heck is the point? Considering there's only one body available, I hope Traxxas has the wherewithal to make sure those fenders will work on whatever else they release.

Or you could just pick the right line and not unlock the diffs at all... ;-) If my opinion on that changes, I'll post here.

Did you have to cut the sticker? I noticed you put the door handle sticker on top. You should grab the knights customs TRX4 doorhandles.

Sort of? It came pre cut and designed to fit the 90 series body. Luckily the rubber fenders are so big. Yeah, James and I are speaking about some option parts.

Here's the video review:

Yeah, I'm a noob so I'm sure there's some truth there, lol. Was just trying to say I did find it useful....

Go out with your traxxas on a slick down hill off camber turn with the diffs locked then unlocked and you will be counting this ability as an advantage

Okay then, I'll try that, but I don't see how that'll make me change my mind on it.

I took it out for an extended run over the weekend and allowed Headquake some time to play with it as well, as I very much value his opinion. The only time we flipped either the two-speed or diff lock switches, was when he realized it was in two speed and the diffs were open. After that, it remained in slow, locked mode. We both agreed that having them locked all the time was the natural place for it to be and I'm already noodling how I can achieve that.

It handled reasonably well, but like many others have found, the weight of the body, combined with the woefully underpowered servo leads to some disappointing moments when the truck gets bound up. It was close to giving up the ghost on a number of occasions and that will need to be replaced ASAP.

With the Pro-Line BFG Krawler T/A's I found traction to be at a premium and the CI foams help keep the tread planted where they're supposed to be.

Aside from the stock servo and gimmicky electronics, it's a fair truck, and a decent entry into the market. Does it perform better than an Axial or Vaterra truck? Meh, no. The higher center of gravity gained by the portals will always set it back a notch.

Now to the tinkering and changing!

Don't own the TRX 4 yet..soon..but i like 1:1 scale operation...street speeds and low range, 2 speed all the way for me.
I built a JK 1/10 rubicon on a HBX 12889 chassis (comes with 2 spd) for trail and street and some crawling(limited because of open differentials)...this Jeep gets run more than my other rigs except for my Vaterra K5 in the winter in snow.
