Can You Read Cursive?

^^ that a good one.

I'm sure there are more out there just as guilty.i just started using a smart phone a few years ago by force. A few weeks ago I forgot it at home was at a buddies house and had to call the other half. He said just tell me the number and I'll call her. Fawk you I can't remember that sh*t. Years ago pre Stupid phone I could no problem. So yeah I admit Smart Phones make you Stupid but I still know how to use my Thomas Guide so :flipoff:

My youngest niece goes to a church school and she hasn't been taught cursive. The last time I was visiting, my brother and I had to sit down and write out the alphabet in cursive. I forgot how to make a "proper" letter for "Q" and "F", my brother forgot how to make the "R" and "Z". It was kind of funny, my niece was thoroughly confused.

Ever since I've had to learn to make the proper font for drafting notation, even my normal print style has changed. I guess most people today are getting used to typing on a keyboard, which is pretty sad that a written language is being slowly forgotten, or taken away, depending on your point of view.

or when something costs $4.10 and you give them a 5 dollar bill and a quarter and they try to hand the quarter back.

I forgot about that scenario, just last week a purchase I made was $10 and change, gave the girl a $20 then found the change to go with it. After some thought she gave me back a $5 and five $1's and a few pennies.

We had a large power outage a few years ago and a few stores that remained open lost money due to improper change being given. Seemed very few of the young clerks could make change without the add of a computer/register.

About 4 or 5 years ago I was just returning to working after being injured at work and the only thing I could find in my town was as a carhop at Sonic. I know how to count change back correctly and got compliments on it all the time. I was also the only person to never have problems zeroing out my money at the end of my day.

I love messing up people with making change. Hand them a 20 and after they punch it in I'll say "I might have the correct change for that." and watch them scramble to make change.

I almost saved myself 15 bucks buying something cash the other day. I was paying 225 and brought 240 cash. The guy had hell making that change and even handed me extra money back. I corrected him and halfway explained what he did wrong. Grown ass adult in his 30s couldn't make sense of $15 change.

Well my little rant here isn't about cursive but rather the noticeable and sometimes irritating generational differences between myself and my wife ( who is quite a bit younger than I). And for what it's worth, I can absolutely appreciate today's technologies and the opposing priorities that separate my generation from hers... so I'm not bad-mouthing anyone here.

BUT... One thing that [for whatever reason] ticks me off is the seeming lack of thought that a lot of younger people utilize... and it's not just her.

Anyway... She had to drive to a new but insanely 'easy to find' location last week for work. I showed her where it was on google maps the night before... even showed her color images. It's a straight shot down the hwy and boom... right there on the left. Well she gets SO lost on the way there that she winds up about another 30 mins further down the hwy! I'm amazed cause this place could not be easier to find. That night I told her that I was concerned that she got lost so easily. Her reaction? "We need to get a GPS". I said "No... you need to pay attention and remember directions better!".

Fast forward a couple days and I'm paying bills... some that we pay online and some that I mail or drop off in person. She tells me that we need to just auto-pay everything so that I'm not having to always remember when things are due. I understand the sentiment but honestly... I've never once had paid a bill late and making sure that I remember what we have coming up that needs paid, is not a big deal in the least!

I guess what I'm leading up to here is the fact that it kills me that younger people seem to not WANT to have to think about things! It's as if they want everything to be streamlined to the point that they don't have to retain information or interact with others unless absolutely necessary. I was raised that you get to know the people that you do business with, and that you learn about where you're money is going, and that you establish relationships by shaking hands! Ugh...

Oh and if you desire writing me a letter, then I assure you that I'm going to read it and respond to it if warranted. OH... and you can write it in cursive, dog shit, upper-case, lower-case, or blood! I'll figure it out and if I can't then I'll damn sure pick up a phone and discuss it with you. Damn, young 'uns... Life should be about more than just downloading another app that appeals to you solely because it allows you to continue not THINKING!

/end rant

In the beginning(The downfall of man) there was the microwave oven made generations unable or unwilling to cook. I think some kids would starve without one. Next, the internet and smart phones; now don't get me wrong it helps us all but it also creats a large amount of pasty skin, overweight shut ins with no real social or survival skills that would not last long without electricity. Next and probably the worst of all, the participant trophy, it created alot of lazy, uninspired, self entitled kids that have no idea of supporting themselves. I'm not a conspiracy theorist but the lack of teaching cursive will ultimately leave people defenseless in fighting for there rights afforded by the constitution and render them sheep under the heel of the government. Rant over.

Interesting that this came up on RCCrawler. Last week we had a couple of recent high school graduates come in to accept an award from the coop I work for. They were asked to sign their names on the bottom of the award. The one kid printed his name. One of the board of directors told him he had to sign his name in cursive. The kid did not know how to write cursive. Ended up being a major embarrassment for the kid and the board member. This all played out in front of everyone that attended the board meeting. Later the board member was commenting on how floored he was that the kids did not know cursive.

I brought up the story to my wife, who is a middle school teacher, her comment was "They don't test for cursive. If it is not on the test, we aren't expected to teach it". She said that she does spend time teaching cursive to her 7th graders because the Constitution and other documents are written in cursive.

The state of affairs in education is bad. When the state politicians are only concerned about test scores. The kids are learning anything except how to take tests.

No student left behind was also part of the downfall. Now the teacher has to target the student with the lowest intelligence so classes are dumbed down.

And sometimes developmentally challenged kids are placed with average kids. I don't know how you can expect either to flourish in an environment like this.

Do you want to throw a millennial or younger into a nose dive do this- Go to a store, buy some items, lets say $11.67 and hand them a $20 bill, After they punch it in, change your mind ask for the $20 back and hand then a $10 and a $5. Step back and watch the fun. Besides cursive they can't count change back.

This drives me nuts. A while back we went to some indoor trampoline park for the kids and I had a similar situation. I think it came to like $15.XX so I handed the girl a 20. A few seconds later I handed her another dollar so I could get a $5 back. She got completely confused. I just explained to her that I just gave her the extra dollar so I could get a $5 back. She said she already punched in the $20 amount so she'd need to get the manager. F**king moron generation. These idiots will be managing our retirement funds someday. We're all doomed.

I like how cash registers tell people (not just kids) how much to give back and they still have problems. :ror:

Not that I'm defending a lack of basic math skills, but how much cash do you think these kids handle in the debit card age? I'm willing to wager they don't handle 1/10 of the cash I did when I was a kid in the 80s. 1/10 of the exposure to something is 1/10 of the repetitions to get better at it.

That's exactly how these auto braking, auto cruise control, traction controlled nanny-state cars are going to eventually get more people killed than they save.

I wouldn't even get my wife started on the "No Child Left Behind" bullsh!t. She hates it. You stated "sometimes developmentally challenged kids are placed with average kids", in my wife's case it is every class. Her classes are filled with kids from the very low IQ to brilliant and the completely unmotivated to highly motivated kids. Yes, she must gear the teaching to try and reach them all. Typical example is the motivated and/or smart kids are off doing self-teaching, while she goes after the core group and the unmotivated/slower kids are often in a "hope for the best" scenario.

I don't not envy her job. She doesn't do it for the money. I am thankful that she is there for those kids.

I was thinking that the other day while watching some asshole driving a 3/4 ton work truck texting while driving. Vehicles have become too easy to drive these days and too safe.

My dad thinks part of a driver's test should include having to be in a car crash. Even a slow speed crash would make people realize you feel it way more than you expect.

I couldn't be a teacher. Parents are assholes and they raise entitled assholes. The parents always blame the teacher and never their brats.

Despite the lie children are told to make them feel better about themselves, humans aren't created equally and we shouldn't be treated like we are especially in school where the minority, once again, ruins it for the majority.

She probably has one in her phone if she has a smartphone. Google maps will do what most GPS units can do.

I can remember doing residential oil delivery with a map book on the passenger seat. My trick was to remember the name of the street that came before the one I needed to take so I knew it was coming up. Kids today would lock up if you handed them a map book.

We only have a couple of things on auto-pay. I don't like giving creditors that kind of power. Emergencies can happen and next thing you know, you bounced an auto-pay and get hit with a fee.

That "lie" is stated in the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence. :flipoff:

In all seriousness, it comes down to schools not wanting to finance Special Ed and dumb-ass parents not wanting their kids to be "stigmatized" by being labeled SPED kids. Sorry... If your kid has a 78 IQ, being in class with smarter children isn't going to rub off.

Dont get me started about the state of our nations school systems. I have a autistic teen, luckily they are very good in my sons school with this. He is integrated with other students for development and pulled out for special education. But what impressed me the most is the support and involvement of the other students. For my son at least, he has normal acceptance and is highly active in sports and other school activities and clubs they come to him and ask him to join. The students and faculty all enjoy his help and teach him more than just educational curriculum.

I went to a Lawyer Office with a will written in cursive by my father. I was told by the legal secretary I would have to translate to print as she could not read cursive. Are there a lot of people out there who can not read cursive? Never gave it any thought until Friday.

WTH?

I don't think they teach it in many schools anymore..pretty sad, I guess they cant even read your constitution either..thats really lame.
Personally I think a person would have to be pretty stunned stupid to not be able to figure it out.

X2

If the legal secretary can't read cursive I wonder about the lawyer she works for. It's kind of scary to me!

Yep, find another lawyer.

The secretary claims she was taught to sign her name cursive.

Here's ma 'X', that's not much teachin to learn cursive. :lmao: How sad.

I'm probably being a bit harsh to say someone is stupid if they cant figure it out, it just seems fairly intuitive to me.
I learned to read it on my own as soon as I could read.

Right? Stop trying thinking for yourself and trying to learn and get ahead in life. jk "thumbsup"

Actually it's a freebie, the older lady in the office is a friend of my wife. Just making the will legal.

Free's not always good in my experience. "thumbsup"
