i may have missed it in a previous post but i have to ask. what is that body from?

I guess I really never said...so no...you didn't miss it.

Lol! it's from Dale Earnhardt toy r/c truck from ToysRus, did a build using this body about six months ago...Mine wasn't very scale at all though...

Actually, you're close, but no cigar. Nice rig though, toomanyrcz...scale or not. The body is from the West Coast Choppers SS. In stock form, it was el Lame-O, for sure. They pumped it's "burnout feature" which was really just totally rediculous. It had this third channel on the controller that lifted the back tires off the ground, then spun the tires and puked out some gank smelling smoke from inside the wheel wells so it looked like it was doing a burnout. It had (obnoxious) engine and burnout sounds too. Drove my dogs crazy. BUT, on the upside, it had functional headlights and taillights, so those will be incorporated into this project to. All in all, for $13 I felt I got a good deal.

I got some suspension work done on my project over the last few days. I got the 4 links mounted, both front and back. I don't have any pics yet, because I have to tweak the lengths a bit to get the angles and wheelbase right where I want it. Then, I'll cut some stainless steel sleeves for the linkages for more support and to give it a cleaner look. But, I did decide to go with springs and dampers on all four corners.

I got the springs mounted, and encountered a few head scratchers along the way. After modifying (a fancy way to say CUTTING) the stock Tamiya suspension stays, I was able to mount the upper links of the four link suspension in a way that would not interfere with my cross members, but still give me optimal articulation. After that, I mounted the springs to the axles using a washer and the outer mounting screw for the suspension stay. I'm not sure I'm sold on this, but for now it's working well. The biggest problem I had was mounting the top of the springs to the frame. As you can see in the picture, I ended up cutting some L-brackets, notching them on both sides and mounting them to the frame, offset just a tad to center them over the springs.

See:

Next, I cut these little closing plates to secure the springs to the L-Brackets. These were cut out of 1/16" aluminum and measure 3/4"L X 3/16"W and were a real joy to make....NOT.

239343797.jpg

One plate goes above the L-Bracket, the screws go through the notches, and one plate goes through the spring and under the bracket. I'm going to slot the frame, where the mounts attach to it, so I can adjust the L-brackets forward or backward. Doing so will give me adjustment for better spring alignment when I tweak the wheelbase. Anyway, as is, when you sinch plates up, and you get this:

I made some cheeeeezey cardboard templates for the damper mounts and used some more binder clips to mount them to the frame for testing purposes. I'll get some better pictures when I build some aluminum mounts and get the dampers mounted permanently, but here's a shot with the body on. Before anyone says anything, I know the body is sitting too high. I have to get some permantent mounts built before I go putting some mounting holes in the body. This shot is just to get an idea of where I'm at. As you can see, I'll be able to drop the body about 1/2" without any problems.

Wowie wow o! Looks good man! So where did you buy that body from for 13$?? I want another one and i don't want to pay 50 bucks for it like the one i bought from Toyrus..... Another question.. what is the measurement on the length of the body? Keep up the good work, and post a vid for sure when you're done with this project!

Thanks guys. I got a little more done, but I've been doing the spring cleaning thing around the house, so my toys got put on hold... I'll get some more done this week hopefully, and get some more pics out there.

Toomanyrcz, I got the body off ebay from some dude who OBVIOUSLY wasn't paying attention. lol The measurements for the body are 18”L, 6.5”W, and 5 1/8”H. I saw the Intimidator body at Wally World the other day, and it is VERY similar to this one.

UPDATES!!

I got the TLT shocks fitted, built the supports and mounted them to the frame. They still need some "tweaking" and a little cleaning up, shaping, filing, etc...but they are functional. You can see some different shots of them in the next pics.

My latest though, is the motor/transmission mount. I debated whether or not to buy another tranny for this but decided to go with my original plan and run the TA02. After much staring and drinking, and......thinking...I decided to mount it vertically instead of horizontally. It just left me with more wiggle room for the drivelines and better mounting options. I realize the COG is higher, but I'm just not gonna lose any sleep over it. Here's the mock up with cardboard.

241302809.jpg

And here it is in aluminum, pretty raw still, but fitted.

241302806.jpg

Another shot, cleaned up and with the goods mounted up. That's a Trinity Monster motor, but I won't be using that motor when it's all said and done.

241302812.jpg

Here's an undercarriage shot. As you can see, I'll be able to mount a couple of cross braces between the frame rails and sinch everything up. Then I figure I'll fab up some skid plates or something to protect the center diff...the LOCKED center diff.

241302813.jpg

Finally, here's a full frame shot of the project, as it currently sits waiting for the next piece of the puzzle.

241302811.jpg

I figure my next bout will be to tie up the transmission and then start on the steering. I pretty well have the steering thought out. It should just be a basic setup, but remains to be done. Also, I have a brand new Mtroniks Viper RV Max ESC waiting for install. The whole "100% Waterproof" thing makes me happy. I'm still not completely sold on my suspension. I'll probably end up with some better springs before I'm finished. I'm also still debating on tires. I have some High Lift rubber, waiting on rims, I have the BFG's, and a couple other sets to check out, so at least I have options. Anyway, as always, I'm WAY open to any thoughts, so shoot...

Damn nice dude, very OUTSIDE the box on the tranny idea. "thumbsup" Like it.

Say, you ready to crawl that thing yet? we might be headed out sat or sun this weekend, give me a hollar if you want to join in."thumbsup"

This is looking decent! More Chevy's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I built a rig with the Dale Jr body, very simililar. Mine just cost me $50 :!: You made out on that body. Mine was 2.2 but it's sitten on 1.9's now. Keep it up, nice build.
"thumbsup"

Unimoger, I'm thinkin THIS little guy won't be done by the weekend, but my other crawler is always ready for a pounding. Got some family stuff this Saturday...I THINK...but lemme know. I'd definately like to get together with you guys sooner than later...this Sunday may be good. I'll be in touch.

Anyway, thanks for the input guys. What's the general concensus on "droop" suspension? I'll have some compression left when I'm fully built and laden with batteries, but as is with my current springs/dampers, I'm running some pretty good suspension sag. Any thoughts on the subject, pros/cons, personal opinions, suck, doesn't suck?

I just got the F150 race truck a week ago. Maybe you could put a shaft running out of the output for front driveshaft and put a heli blade on it for the really tough hills.:)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! DUDE! I wondered if anyone was gonna catch on that this tranny has a "PTO!" Excellent idea with the heli blade...hey Unimoger, THAT is thinking outside the box. Seriously though, for about 12 seconds I considered how I could use that output for a winch. Then I thought about a fan to cool the motor, then I thought about a pump, to run a circulating cooling system, then I thought....I'm just gonna go to bed. Nice catch though, scruff...good stuff. :)

Updates....need updates...:D

BOOOOOOOOOYAAAAH!!!

ANYway, I got some more shizzle done to my Franken-f***in-stein... I wanted to reinforce the transmission by adding more mounting points, and I have definately accomplished that. Here's a stripped down undercarriage shot. Essentially it's the same as the prior pic, but with the diff cover removed and the differential taken out. I did this to build a cardboard template and trace around the bottom of the tranny, figure my mounting points, and cut out an access hole so the diff cover is exposed.

243378097.jpg

I wanted to have access to the differential without having to remove the entire transmission. This way I can whip out the four screws that hold the diff cover in place and do a quick lube job. Or I could keep going and unhook the bottom links of the suspension, pull the drivelines, pull apart the outdrives, and simply drop the differential. This is cool if I want to swap out the locked diff with an open diff, or even drop the front driveline and just run rear wheel drive. ROOSTER TAILS AND DRIFT, BIATCH! I also was able to use 4 more mounting points for the transmission, to help solidify things. Here it is, all buttoned up.

243378136.jpg

I put another side plate on the right side, so I could zip in a couple more mounts. All in all, I have three mounting points on the left side, four on the bottom, and two on the left side. If the transmission/motor unit comes loose, I've done something horribly wrong. :) Here are a couple pics of the whole works, from the top view.

One shot:
243378126.jpg

Two shot:
243378119.jpg

Given the completed mounting of the transmission and motor, I was up against some problems regarding the drivelines. I bought some telescoping T-Maxx sliders, spent a night and a half modding everything to make them work, then found out they would NOT work. The angles were "okay" but when it was said and done, the transmission's outdrives and the nature of the sliders did not work together. So, I ended up building dogbones. No problem, right...it's all cool? Not yet... The next problem was the top links of the suspension, in the rear end. At full compression the rear driveline was hitting the crossbar that the upper links were mounted to. I ended up moving the links outward, and mounting them to the frame. They mount up nice and tight, but I ran into problems with the angles of the links from the axles. I tried "angled" links, with a nicely placed bend in them. This worked for the travel, but left the rear end all sloppy and needing a pan hard bar. I tried crossing the links (making an X) but I'd have had to bend them at their contact point to keep them from binding. After a bunch of ****in' 'round I came up with this atrocity:
243378110.jpg

This is only a temporary mock up (with a big screw and zip ties!) but it serves it's purpose. By bending the links, I lost stability, but gained clearance. By binding those links in the middle, I put that stability back and kept the clearance I needed. I figure a top and bottom plate with a couple of screws through them will sinch up the new angled upper links nicely.

Finally, I've also gotten around to playing with some different tire/rim choices. This is just a prelim, but here's a shot with some new rims inside some High Lift tires.
243378105.jpg

It gives me a little more ground clearance, obviously, and they still look like they'll tuck up inside the wheel wells when I drop the body. I'm still messing around with how to mount the body, so like I said, that shot is just conceptual. Looking at this shot makes me realize that this pig wants a mudhole so bad...I'm starting to get antsy.

I love the build man, I just bought that body also. I got the same one Cole did though, had to pay $50 for it too. But the Dale SR comes with a sweet arse full interior.

I think the body needs 1.9's like you are doing. This is mine with 2.2's.

GOTTA LOVE THESE HARD BODIES

Josh

Hey, thanks for the input guys. Obijuan, those rims are getting replaced, but I'm liking the looks of the HL tires fo sho! I'd agree that this body does look pretty good up on there. The Intimidator does have a killer interior though. I'd build an interior for this one, but I'm afraid the motor and trans just don't offer me the option. Maybe I'll redo it later.

IronOx, I assume you're talking about my rear upper links...yeah... :) ...they are different. So far, I think they'll be fine. Obviously, the true test will be to get out and wheel it and see how it moves, but I'm optimistic that it will work out. Like I said though, the picture is just a tacky mock up. It'll look better when I'm done building it. Hopefully, it'll all work out for me.

Lol! Can't wait to see the atrocity suspension links working on video! HL tires look badash, just get some nicer rims.
