*Warning* This is just me venting and the following is only my opinion. I do not mean to bash anyone I just want to share my experience so others can learn from it.

I am an electric guy. I have a tc3 that I race, a tlt crawler, and a rustler that was an awesome first time hobby grade rc vehicle. My Dad and little brother just bought a Duratrax Raze each which are nitro. They absolutely love them so that got me to thinking.

I was kinda afraid of nitro because I have heard of tuning issues and such but the more I talked to my Dad the more I wanted one. I read reviews that explained that the raze is a good buggy as long as you don't expect too much. I love rc and decided this would be a great way to spend time with my Dad and little brother so I decided to buy one. I went to the local hobby shop were I live. I explained to the guy that the only reason I was buying one was to run with my family this weekend and asked if we could fire it up and check everything out since I was new to nitro. He basically said no that if I wanted it I would buy it and I was on my own. I probably should have went elsewhere but I was trying to support the lhs so I bought it.

I got it home and you can guess what happened. It would not start. The piston was seized in the chamber. I tried for 6 hours to get it going. My Dad drove 2 hours to help me fix it and even he couldn't get it going. I called Duratrax and they were really nice and told me to send it back and they would take care of it. I explained the situation and asked could the lhs exchange it since it had never ran and they said it was up to him. I called the lhs explained everything and he called Duratrax. He got the ok to exchange it so I took it back. It had a few scratches on the bottom from holding it down trying to pull the cord. The muffler was dented when I opened it up and I might have put one more in it trying to hold the car down to start the engine. I took it back and the lhs guy didn't even take the time to check it out. He told me to get the other and I could go. I guess he was busy. He then called me and told me that I screwed him because of the scratches on the chassis and that he didn't need customers like me not to ever come back to his store. I told him that I did not try to decieve him and that I would bring it back and he said to keep it and not every come back to his store.

I feel really bad about the whole situation. I got a faulty product and was treated like I was a jerk all because I spent money on something and expected it to work. The new one fired right up and I love it. If I were a newb this whole deal would have made me curse rc forever and I will probably never buy another nitro after this. You would think that a lhs would appreciate the business expecially in a small town. My point is if you won't stand behind a product you shouldn't sell it. If people are willing to spend money in your store you should be willing to help them out if at all possible.

I know this was a long post. Thanks to all who read. I guess I justed needed to vent.

Just be glad the hobby shop offered to take the original back, most won't. It's not their product, so it's not up to them to replace it. That being said, I'm surprised the guy wouldn't help you with the first one. I wouldn't have expected it to be free, but most shops do offer tuning/ break-in services.

Unfortunately, this does not seem to be an uncommon occurrence though. Every hobby shop around me has had so many employees come and go over the past 5 years due to the conditions in which they had to work. While I can understand how dealing with annoying kids and their parents all day can be very trying, they shouldn't take it out on other customers, but that's not how humans tend to act.

Unfortunately, the cost of running a brick and mortar shop is ridiculous. Between rent, utilities, and taxes, these guys are probably struggling to keep the place open. The prices are high at the LHS for just this reason.

I don't codone how you were treated, but it's just how this business goes. And with many inexperience guys bringing back perfectly good product that has been beaten and broken, then expecting replacements for a "faulty" product... The cycle is continually perpetuated.

Most companies offer GREAT service for their products, unfortunately it takes a week or two for them to get your replacements shipped out. It's my opinion that all defective products be dealt with through the manufacture, because sticking the LHS with faulty stuff is just causing the already poor prices to increase.

----

BTW, I don't buy from my LHS. Unfortunate truth is: If it wasn't there, I wouldn't miss it.

My lhs has great customer service. They bend over backwards to keep me happy, although I am a regular and send a ton of dough in there.
They even match the price of Tower Hobbies.

The next closest store to me is packed with A holes so it goes to show you that no two places are the same.

I would find another LHS to support. Most places will break in a nitro for a small fee too...

my hobby shop is pretty nice, i only buy parts from them, if even that, i buy all my new cars of tower hobbies, since they will return or exchange no problem.

i am in the process of opening a shop, it seems to very common amoungst them to treat people like they dont know anything, i know that is why i am opening my own shop.

as far as it being expensive to run a brick and motor shop its no more expensive than any other buisness. i think most owners set unrealistic sales goals due to facilitys they are in.... that is why i am not open yet, i am waiting for my shop to be finished, it took me over a year to find a good location with a rent that made it possible to succede."thumbsup"

I used to volunteer at the LHS running Nitro workshops to help tune their rigs. Mind you I was doing this for free with no reimbursement and on my own time. I was tuning 15+ rigs each time and never had any issues. The LHS "released" me because I was doing "too good" of a job and that not enough people were buying replacement or upgrade engines.

I love stupid logic!

4stAir..... I dont think you have looked at your actual Margins on the "KITS", to stay competative by towers standards you wont make any on kits. All money is in parts

The shop i work in has a policy that we dont break anything in..... if something goes wrong the manufacturer is more willing to work with the customer and make things right "QUICKLY". where as with a shop the MFG. can drag their feet and make it look like it was the shops fault.

Kit returns are as such, you open it and put gas in it, we dont know what has been done to it, If you took it out and ran it full out from the second it started to the sec it stops or you babied it and let it idle for 5 tanks (both are incorrect) we couldnt tell the difference 1/2 of the time. If we took it back and the DISTRIBUTOR not the mfg denies it the shop has to eat it.

Is this guy the owner or a worker? If he is just a worker I would talk with the owner or manager. Turning a customer away like that is about the dumbest thing he could have done. Make sure to tell 10 friends about how well he treated you!

like i said i ran the numbers based on the margins, and searched till i found a spot that the numbers work for a profit and not a loss... i have been at this for over a year, it isnt that expensive to run a hobby shop if you dont over extend yourself. i question how most shops stay open in my area just based on what they pay in rent a month.

the nearest Hobbie stort to me is 37 miles . I will not drive 37 miles to shop there!! I drive 53 miles to get treated right . I will pay more and drive longer just to be treated right . "thumbsup"

exactly how it is here, i drive a lot farther than i need to so i get knowledgable service.

that is what builds a successful shop. i am hoping i will be that shop for my area."thumbsup"

Need a partner? LOL

i actually already have everything rolling, my spot will be ready in less than 90 days....

join up with SVSC and you will atleast be getting a discount "thumbsup"

I totally understand everything you guys are saying. It just made me feel like crap after it all happened even though I don't feel like I did any thing wrong. I am a 25 year old husband, teacher, and coach. Everywhere I go and everything I do I am setting an example for someone whether I mean to or not so I always try to do the right thing. I don't always do the right thing but I try. I did not intentionally decieve anyone so it was really frustrating.

My dad also recieved a faulty buggy from another lhs in the town where he lives. He happily exchanged it and said that if he appreciated the business. I will gladly buy from that man any time I am in town and have the opportunity. It was the owner of my lhs. I am not going to bash him all around town but I have told my friends that they might want to be cautious about dealing with him. From now own I will order from tower or drive 30 minutes to Hobbytown.

As always thanks for the support and the help. This forum rocks and has made rc much more fun.

I work at a hobby shop, and from what our customers have said. We are the best one around our area. There are three, and one of the guys is a straight up @$$, and the other guy (the one we recomend if we are out of something) just doesn't do alot of RC cars. We have no problem at the one I work at, with showing someone how to get their new nitro running.

I think this qualifies for the ten friends .Even if you don't directly know him , or the lhs ,if help isn't available for a good reason ,then there is probably a better place to go .
The shops I go to seem to be happy to help , wins you new customers .

that really sucks what happened but now you know i guess

the shop by my house is great because they have 2 main guys, 1 is into models and planes, the other does trucks and cars. there both enthusiastic about rc crawling and the little i can tell them they soak up and use. it seems every time i go there theres more and more crawler stuff.

well best of luck with your lhs
