TSS based FJ40 Build

I was thinking something along these lines...

A winch would look nice sitting up on that bumper too...

More progress on the front bumper today. I made a stinger for the front and the braces to go back to the grill guard. This whole thing bolts together with the front bumper and is also an integral body mount.

Cory made it real easy to mount all this right to the front of the frame. "thumbsup"

I am pretty happy with how it turned out...I am going to leave it alone for now and decide if I need to add anything else (D-rings, winch, etc.) later on.

Next I guess I will start working on either the battery tray for the front or some pimpy rock sliders.

this may be a very basic question, but how did you remove the stock center pin on the jugg leaf. i don't want to damage the leaf pack hacking it out... thanks for the help!

btw, nice work!

Thanks for the compliment.

To separate the spring pack I ground down the rivet in the middle and used a small punch to knock it out of the opposite side. They were a PITA to re-drill since the material is spring steel and so thin. Going slow was the key.

that stinger looks great, but really needs a winch to fill the space up.

loving this build.
Odd question-what weight oil did you use in the tlt shocks? I'm going to switch mine over to them as an experiment to get more articulation.

Thanks!!!

Couldn't tell you, honestly. They are empty at this point. I just put a little silicone on the shafts so not to mess up the seals. I plan on turning them down at some point...so I just left them dry for now. I usually like to put heavy oil in them to slow things down...this is the first set of TLT shocks that I have used.

Got to spend a little more time out in the shop today. Hopefully, Cory won't beat me up over this one...but I modified the chassis a little. I made this mod for a few reasons and ultimately building stuff like this ends up being a series of compromises that hopefully work out for the greater good. I took the center section of the frame and dropped it down about 3/8 of an inch. It allowed me to drop the lower 4-link a little to an angle that looks a little better. I was also having trouble with clearance on the rock sliders there as well. The mod also allowed the motor and transmission to drop down a little and lower the CG as well. This, of course, also helps with the driveshaft angles as well. On to the pics.

First is the new cradle that was made using the existing skid plate/transmission mount. I took the chance to bevel the front and rear of the skid plate to help prevent hangups.

I did not loose much ground clearance in the process, and I kind of like how it makes the bottom of the truck look. To me it adds a little to the realism of the frame to see the transfer case mount hanging down. I like the 4-link angles better now too.

Rock Sliders

I also got time today to start working on some rock sliders. I was able to get one side done and mounted. They are made from 3/16" tubing like the other parts on the truck. To mount them, I brazed a 4-40 nut to the end of each of the chassis connector tubes and used a screw from the back side to hold them on. The holes were already in the frame rails thanks to Cory. Nice and clean.

 when i saw the first pic i thought you hacked the chassis in half lol. looks killer.
sliders are NICE, id recomend, using a LONG screw going into the nut and tube to help stifin it as ive found a single unsupported tube like that (especially holding on sliders) bends VERY easily, especially after being exposed to the heat of the MAPP torch.
or what about a angled piece going up to the top of the rail? to give a bit of triangulation?
looks GREAT! killer work.

I like the mod you did to lower the motor. I had issues with the driveline too and the links as well. might consider this mod later...

looking good on this build!

Thanks for the encouragement! I have been having a lot of fun with this build so far. I am starting to get excited about it, even though there is plenty of work that needs to get done. I got a coulple of cool email notices today...that means that most all the stuff I need to make it a 1.9 is on the way and could be here by the weekend. Pretty sure you guys are gonna dig what I picked out.

Alright...so how about some feedback on some other stuff? Here are the things that I will do on the project:

- Roof rack (possibly a semi cage style that comes down the side partway)
- Custom grille hopefully with some integrated headlights
- Winch on front bumper

Here are some things I am considering, but am on the fence about:
- Functional winch that comes through the winch on the bumper
- Cutting off stock front fenders and replacing them with tubular fenders (same outline) and metal covers all painted black. (Rear flares will be black as well)
- Spare tire carrier on back
- D rings on front and or rear bumpers

So what do you think? I know, just do all of it...

looking forward to the grill/headlights!....something similiar to my TJ/YJ grills?

as far as your thoughts
i like scale plastic model winches (non function) over working servo winches coming threw a fairlead, now combine the two and youve doubled your money:lol:

tube fenders are always sweet assuming you can keep the true to the FJs style

spare tire carrier....yes! swing out? even cooler"thumbsup"

small scale looking D-rings always add realism8)
