So this is the beginning of my first scale rig bassed on an e-maxx . I've only built an AX10 kit and crawled for about an hour before. The AX10 just didn't have the appeal I was after, already I'm far more excited about fabricating parts and being constructive with this project rather than just assembling a kit.

The aim is to make this thing large and beefy, possibly a 10mm tube frame - not sure yet.

I'll have lots of questions along the way, there's a few things I'm not sure about...

If anyone is interested in my axel lockout, here's a scale drawing.

Yes, although I may not mount servo's in the brace, I'm thinking of getting 2 huge brick ones for rear steer too....

If you don't mind Dude, I'd like to copy your cutting board design to get an idea of the shock and link positions before committing to building a tube?

The rear axle will be identical to the front - steering etc.

Next job is to work out how to mount the tranny,,,,, It's sooooo top heavy... :|

Ok, not much to report, been a bit busy. I decided to mount the tranny on it's side so as it's not top heavy.

Sitting on top of the delrin skid, I made a fibreglass mould to support the trans and motors. This will be trimmed and bonded to the delrin.

No idea how I'm going to mount the massive servo yet, that'll be fun, got a smaller tower pro servo for the rear.

I have some questions regarding motors for later.

take off the top motor if your trying to keep it from being so top heavy. i only run my maxx crawler with 1 motor and it works great. you also get much better run times on your battery packs.

yes it will help the center of gravity but if you take a motor off you will have to get a new esc. correct me if im wrong for the new model but i know you do for the old emaxx

Yes, I still can't decide what to do with the EVX-2, and motors situation. The gearing is now a 9 tooth pinion and 68t spur. With the weight of two battery packs and two motors, it's probably better to swap the esc, use a 3 cell lipo and perhapse 1 Novak 55t ot Integy 65t motor.

Any thoughts on that?

Whether a rooster combo would be best I don't know, I'll only be able to run 2 cell lipo's with them. Wheel speed isn't a priority, good crawling ability and long running times are.

Yup, I'm aware of that but I believe the EVX-2 doesn't run on 1 battery pack. A Tekin FXR is looking imminent.

Big Update.

It's been a long time since I've started work on the project again, hopefully this time I'll get it finished.


Trying to get some idea of a chassis, I cut several from chopping boards until I was happy. Still isn't the right shape in the pic but it was essential to get mounting holes in the right position.

Being my first scratch built crawler I had no idea where it was going or if I was doing it correctly. I've made loads of mistakes and used a mountain of delrin.

The final design has been made so if I get board with it being scale, I can return it back to a crawler with (hopefully) good crawling ability.

It's nearly at the stage where I can start work on the body, that's something I'm really looking forward to.

I just love a good E-maxx build, as you probably know, they are quite the challenge. You may want to re-think the steering geometry. I did a similar set up, and the ackerman was terrible. Try to use a draglink to connect the knuckles.

Those steering links caused me all kinds of problems, I spent a whole day just thinking how to do it.

A straight rod from one wheel to the other isn't possible because of the diff housing being in the way. When I put a slight bend in the rod for clearance, not only did the wheel rims rub on them when turning the steering, the delrin flexed easily. Tried aluminium but I just couldn't get it to work because it needed so many bends.

Any ideas?

The next job is the body. I've made a start on the front grill, it was horrible chrome before.

I'm not sure what to do with this, I want it to have a military look. Obviously it can all be painted black and lose the nitro bottle. May be olive green would be better.

Keep up the good work. I am a Chevy guy, but that body is cool, can't wait to see how the military theme plays out.

Here is a pic of how I ended up doing the steering on mine. Looks simple but it was a long road. Your steering angles may not be as bad as mine was with your servo mounted vertically.
