The next industrial revolution, no. The next capitalist venture from china to the US, most definately.
Every time a gun thread is started here quality and craftsmanship come up and now we're looking at a plastic gun. Just like the idea of criminals purchasing the equipment and gaining the knowledge to make these is silly, so is the idea of the average joe doing so. How many quality guns could you buy with $2,500?
But on a manufacturing scale this could definately be a money maker by capitalizing on all of the suckers out there.
Like I said, this firearm is nothing more than a proof of concept. It can indeed be done.
Small businesses and individuals who dream of bringing products to market are faced with the high cost of designing, prototyping, and testing their ideas.
It's the biggest obstical in bringing concepts into reality.
I've seen it personally with some of the small venders here on RCC.
Often, the chore of even creating a prototype is so expensive, great ideas are left on the design table do to cost.
This is exactly why 3D printing has the potential to be a game changer for small business and individuals.
Manufacturing was once limited to big business with big money. 3D printing can put the power of prototyping and one-off manufacturing into the hands of the little guy.
With a 3D printer and a digital design, someone can produce a working three-dimensional object of virtually anything right on the spot.
As the design, technology, and materials improve. So will the durability, quality, and functionality of the products these printers produce.
I think it's way to early in the game to poo poo the potential that 3D printing has to offer.
