4PK Setups, Tips, Tricks and Help

Ok I'm sick of the stupid nimh in my 4pk (cost me a race this weekend)

Anyway I want to run a lipo in it. Why CAN'T I use a lipo??

I find multiple thread where people say "I wouldn't suggest it" but I can't find anyone that has tried and/or posted the results.

i.e. did the radio burn up, did it give an error, did it just not turn on????

I don't want to use LiFe
1: don't want to buy a new charge
2: I'm very familiar with LiPo's
3: I have Lipo's that would fit already

Incorrect voltage will damage the radio. LiFE is the best choice, sorry but that's just the rub of it.

You could do a voltage regulator and LVC but that seems ridiculous.

The only reason I can think of not to use a Lipo in the radio is simply because of no low voltage cutoff. If you wire one in inline of the battery and voltage falls low enough, you can potentially lose control of your rig (damage, wreck, etc). If you don't wire one in, you run the risk of damaging the battery. The low battery warning trips at 4.9v. If you hear the warning, you've already damaged a Lipo.

A 2s lipo fully charged will trip the high voltage warning on the 4PK (8.0v) as well and is probably the reason why they aren't recommended.

LiFe batteries (although you don't want to use them) are still probably the best choice for the radio and will allow you to have a spare battery.

I've been cycling back and forth between my LiFe and Nimh pack on mine (per charge cycle) and have not ever had any issues.

Marcus

Good info. I don't know why I didn't think of that before

Thanks guys

I picked up a spare battery from Chris at cheap battery packs. I think it is a 2200 mah pack. Works with the factory 4pk charger. Works great.
I just swap between the two packs and have not had a problem. Might not be a bad idea to bump charge it between races.

Posting for a friend. He has a 4PK under a year old. Today his reverse quit. The display bar didn't react to the trigger, so it must be a radio, not car issue. He switched to another model and then to an unassigned model and the behavior didn't change.

After a bit, he could get some reverse, occassionally full reverse but it reverted to a short bar without even moving the trigger. Forward worked better, but sometimes he only got 75% bar length.

We're guessing dirty trigger pot or something. Is this a "send back" or something user serviceable?

Sometimes a simple but of compressed air will fix things like that. If your aren't comfortable with it though then send it in.

Depending in conditions the radio are in they can get dirty and cause these issues. Worst I've ever seen was Gatekeeper. I bet we poured a pop bottle cap full amount of sand and dirt out of his!

So should we crack the case to clean things up? I kinda assumed the trigger pot was sealed, so not cleanable. Will going inside affect the Futaba warranty (how long is it?)

Edit -- Actually I just heard the compressed air helped and he said to say thanks.

If its under warranty I wouldnt mess with it at all and contact Futaba I had a trigger pot go bad contacted Futaba and they sent me an email to send it back. Repair was free. My other 4PK is onlder than the other and I havent had any problems out of it.

Harley ....u da man
I followed your instructions and the Progress is now proportional
...now to set-up all the scalers and winches

First post read, winch now working with variable speed. The 4PK is sweet, now my 1.9 C2, and Wraith/C3 are set up the same way for winching. Thanks Josh!"thumbsup"

Mis-read your post! Sorry, disregard following post!

What kind of which are you using? Is it just a servo style winch? If so then those won't work with the variable control. The variable control is for those guys that are using a small ESC to control the winch (like some of the guys running the Quicksand).

Let me know if I can help with anything else.

I followed the steps on the winch set up post, I think is post #2, and it all worked out. I have a Hitec 645MG servo as the winch on the 1.9 programed the Dial 3 on top of the Tx to channel 3, set it up for 30 norm, and the winch has two speeds, I think is great , I even hooked up the hook to a shelf that is at about 6 feet high and pulled up the truck at the two different speeds.

As for the Wraith I do have one of the 3 Racing winches for the Traxxas Summit, I will for sure let you know if I run into any problems. I will be at the Scale Nats, maybe I can get some tips and tricks from you in person!"thumbsup"
