Advice on cutting lugs, looking for more bite

Been running this set of DJ Crawler 70mm 1.3's on my trx4m build. Cut the lugs on all four as you can see here compared to stock.

Definite improvement after cutting the lugs. Running them in the reverse direction also seems to work better. As far as inserts I'm using yellow injora silicone ones with the outer rings trimmed off.

I'm still fighting for more grip/bite when the wheels are pointed straight ahead. They seem to grab a lot better with the steering cranked. And sometimes the front end just wants to wash out. The terrain is mostly smooth-ish rocks with sharp corners and big ledges to try to pull over.

Maybe cut some sipes into the lugs, but oriented at 90 degrees to the direction of travel? Trim or re-shape the remaining lugs?
 
Not sure how much more bite you can get from those but if it was me and I was set on more trimming ( with the terrain that you described) I might be inclined to run a dremel cut-off wheel through the centers of the outer most lugs. That would allow those outer lugs to flex a little more and maybe grab a bit better on those off camber rocky climbs. Keep in mind that if those tires are already pretty soft that you might be sacrificing performance as you don't want those outer lugs simply folding over.

Sorry to clarify do you mean cut a groove side to side or front to back?

Right now its more like the lugs want to skip over the rock, rather than fold over.
 
Side to side yes... definitely not front to back. I wouldn't cut them too deep... Just enough of a cut ( or groove) for those outer lugs to be able to have more flex and subsequently more grip. You'd basically be taking a lug and changing it to two lugs... if that makes sense. But again, not too deep ( maybe 3/16" or so) as you are limited on large lugs and don't want to sacrifice the stability along the edges/ shoulders of the tires.
