Anybody alergic to bee/wasp stings?

Cut an onion in half and put it on the sting when it happens . It helps a lot . And bennadryll ( sp) .

I'm usually a pretty fair distance from any produce when I'm at the greatest risk of getting stung, but I did try the onion thing on Saturday. Don't know whether or not it helped but I smelled oniony fresh for a couple of days. :ror:

I had a wasp get into a can of soda on me once. Took a swig and felt him hit my tongue. Leaned forward and opened my mouth to let everything drop out, and he tagged me on the lower lip on the way out.

I can't tell you how many times I've done that with bees, but luckily have never been stung. Now if my can of whatever has been sitting unattended for a few minutes I'll give it a thump on the side before picking it up. If it doesn't buzz, its good to go.

I would recommend getting an epipen to carry with you, or at the very least keep a bottle of benadryl with you.

Since I don't have a doctor, and my wife and sons doctor currently has a 6 month waiting list for new patients, I guess I'll have to stick with the Benadryl for now.

btw: where do I get Benadryl in liquid form? All I could find were the gel caps or bottles of childrens Benadryl...

Allergic enough that after only my second sting I was hospitalized.

First sting was ever stung was while I was laying in my bed at night. Little bugger had managed to crawl up into the bed sheets during the day and was waiting for me to fall asleep. :flipoff:

The second time, which I was hospitalized for, was while I was working on redoing some landscaping retaining walls (daily occupation). A group of angry hornets had made a nest in the wall and one of them got ticked off enough that I was near their home that he drilled me in the arm. About ten minutes later I couldn't hardly breathe, had a tingle sensation in my hands and feet, and was breaking out in hives everywhere you sweat (armpits, legpits, the goods, etc). Thankfully we are only twenty-five minutes from the nearest hospital at a reasonable speed -- even faster when you're in a rush.

Ever since that time I have always kept an epipen close by (more often than not, on my person). I was told, however, not to use it unless you start feeling symtoms of a sever allergic reaction. As others have said, different bees/hornets/wasps have different types and intensities of venoms and some will not affect you nearly as bad as others. And, even if you think you're safe by simply taking the epipen injection, you're not. You are still supposed to go to the hospital for official treatment; the adrenaline concoction is not enough to ward off the venom.

Cheers,
Kyle

When I was a kid I was, I would swell up all over and have a hard time breathing. They would give me a shot and I'd get wired up off it. I think I've out grown it, I've been stung a bunch of times as an adult and it didn't do anything to me.

:lmao:

not sure, the Rescue Ninja will have to anwser that "thumbsup"

I really dont know. Mostly, with medications, after expiring they are less potent/useful. Could be bad if youre using an expired epipen expecting it to save your life and it doesnt do a whole hell of a lot... but i would think something would be better than nothing. No idea if it would hurt you in any way or not, i'll have to look that up when i get home.

And idk if benadryl comes in liquid for adults. I give it IV all the time, but thats obviously not the same thing. The gel caps work pretty quick though

When I was 7 or 8 years old, my brother, cousin and I were running through the woods at my cousins house on easter.....

My cousin was in front. He knocked the nest down from the tree........
My brother was second, he stomped on the nest as he was running........
Me...last. I got covered in yellow jackets and stung over 60 times. That hurt like crazy. To this day, I can count on one hand how many times I have been stung since then. I do not think I am allergic, but I do know, whenever there are bees around, I get violent. They all must die....either that or I run and scream like a girl...:lmao:

I got that treatment too, but from wasps.

Had to move a car that had sat for years. Didn't see the big brown basketball between the seats until it was too late. Learned that wasps can fly faster than I can run. Got hit about 40 times. Really ruined my day.

Haven't been stung since, but something tells me it wouldn't be a good idea.

The way its been described to me, is if you are allergic, as you get stung your allergy can worsen over time. I've been allergic since I was a kid. At first, just more than normal swelling.......then worse swelling. Parents took me to the doctor, who told me a sting or two more and I would probably need to carry the epipen, like my dad does.

Didn't get stung again for years.........was working on a car we were parting out for hot rod parts. I was pulling the door locks and power windows, mom called for dinner, every one high tailed it inside, I figured would get the last window motor out. Reach down in, feel a really sharp pain....I pass out....those dicks left me out there assed out in the car for an HOUR, nobody noticed I never came in....and to add additional insult to injury, the bee was DEAD. Yes, stung by a dead bee...stinger stays active for a while.

I got stung again about 7 years ago....passed out, hit my head on the side of the car.....luckily paramedics were there already. I woke up to my mom having rubbed onion on it (helps draw out the stinger, I say old wives tale)....and the paramedic was rubbing meat tenderizer on it, as a bee sting is just a massive shot of protein....I felt like a steak.

Moral of the story, go see a doctor and stay away from bees.

Never had a problem with Bees/Wasps. I have no idea how many times Ive been stung over my lifetime but never got more than a little bump.

Now Japanese Hornets (the 3" long mini-Apaches) are a different story. My pops was stung on the forehead by one when I was a kid and it damned near killed him. Ive never been stung by one but am scared to death of them.

I don't know so much about wasp's , only been bit once by a hornet and did'nt really do anything except hurt like hell.
I did get into a nest of black widows when I was about 18 and swelled up pretty good on my hand where they bite me and a couple years later one got me again and did'nt really even affect me.
I do know that a mixture of water , baking soda and oatmeal will draw most stings poison out if applied quickly and it is warm, sounds weird but works.

Alot of expired meds from our country get sold to second and third world countries. These places use them as front line meds. I agree with Ninja in the fact that the potency of an expired med could be questionable.

Benadryl in liquid is gonna be RX only or on your local ambulance. Same thing with Epi. Unlike another person that posted, you should definatley call an ambulance if you have any light headedness or difficulty breathing. I don't mean to armchair QB but endangering other peoples lives along with your own is not the right answer.

Duuuuuuude.... as to your OP.. yes it sounds like you are becoming allergic to stings. An epi pen is not a bad idea. I would certainly carry Benadryl with you. Just remeber, the sooner you take it after being stung the better your outcome will be. Pepcid also helps, it blocks some of the other receptors in your body.

for any interested, I'm a paramedic in FL.

Nah, I went and bought some Benadryl and took some vit C. Sunday morning it was noticeably better. Today even more so. My arm is back to normal and my hand is just slightly puffy on top.

I'm thinking that I may want to be prepared for future incidents though...maybe I'm allergic, maybe I'm not.

I will swell up from an ant bite , all insect venom is rough on me . I had the doctor give me , the eppie pens . But then I got this pack of benadryl from a perscrition . If you get stung you take like two or three wright away , then it tells how long between each of the next dose. Last time I got stung on the back of the hand before I could get to the house (100 yards) to get meds . my hand and arm looked like homer simpson's !!!!!
Allergic is where your breathing is labored from swelling , reactive is local swelling .
