A friend of mine  got this crazy idea to make some shine , so after tons of reading he ended up with about 2 litres of the good stuff . It burns a nice blue flame and goes down smooth , but it has a champagne tast to it and HE was wondering if that was normal. Also would distilling it again take the tast away ? I prefer his stuff to everclear by far just curious if that how it should taste . And yes he tossed the heads and tails . His mash was made from 4lbs of cornmeal (natural) and 3lbs white sugar in a 7 gallon bucket . Thanks in advance

I know a guy that tried.. It tasted like a corn stalk shit down your throat and didn't do much in the way of getting you drunk. But it sure was fun!

Using sugar is the bastard way of making it... the best shine is made using whole corn kernals dampened and let sprout then crush them/ferment follow standard procedures. Then its the natural sugars doing the work instead of artificialy adding sugar to feed the yeast.

That's how I would do it if I was to but, since you don't have a tax stamp I'm sure, I can neither approve of nor condone the practice

well its my "friend" and no I dot think HE does have any of the legal ends tied up. But on the note of bastard booze it sure is some two hitter quitter stuff:flipoff:. and Im a fan of Sailor Jerry

I have some stuff a friend of mine from Tennessee gave me and it doesn't have a champagne taste. It is kind of rough going down but it is like you said a 2 hitter quitter. I have no clue how it was made though.

Back in 1994'ish my grandparents got busted for the stuff. ATF, State Police, Country officers, and local officers swarmed their property. Handcuffed them, removed the still and all the booze they could find on the property. They made the front page of the newspaper too!

Luckily the ATF folks didn't find all of what was stashed away. Several gallons we still nicely hidden.

Cool story:mrgreen:
Back during prohibition, my grandfather and some of his friends had their own equipment to make liquor and since my house was originally a winery, they made that too. They'd get busted quite regularly by the local law, get thrown in jail for a day or two, released, then the sheriff's dept. would sell their equipment back to them:ror:

When I was a kid I unknowenly helped with productions on the "family" still. My grandpa would take us kids to our 3rd cousins house to work on the still or grind the corn. Cop car would show up at the cousins house regularly for his bottle and as far as I know they never got busted... they are all long gone now so asking for the family receipt is out of the question but I can tell you they would make it from anything that would ferment and using more than a cup of sugar was a mortal sin.

In Tennessee it is legal to have Shine now. As a matter of fact when i got married last month in Gatlinburg they had a still and what not on the strip selling it all legal. Yes it was 100% proof. It tasted nasty and burned like the devil himself was crawling down your throat.

Man I haven't made any for over 15 years, Mine had no taste that I remember, hydrometer put it at 97 proof mmm good stuff made one hell of a screwdriver. It's my understanding that as long as you are not selling it you are in the clear just like wine and beer.

I did make a batch of cherry brandy last fall 63 proof, tasted like koolaid and knocked you on your ass.

I've never made it, my dad used to make wine and mead though. All I know about that is it takes quite some time to do, and lots of sterilization to keep the wrong stuff from getting in.

I did, however, buy some of this:

It's only 80 proof, and tastes like really cheap sake. I could only gag down a shot, it's busy gathering dust on my liquor shelf...
