Anyone else think the stock tires are too big?

I personally don't like either the size or the appearance of the new tires. They are way too wide, and a bit tall. What do you guys think?

Also, what are some choices for something smaller that looks scale and performs well in a variety of conditions?
 
I like the overall look and performance, but I agree that they seem a bit wide. The fun thing about tires is that there are a lot of options. ProLine's version of the tire looks more scale proportional to me.
 
You'd probably like ProLines version of the same tire. More scale markings and it's much narrower than the kit tire. One of the guys I crawl with has a set so I could compare in person. Also, TSL non XLs would be a bit smaller and perform well. Don't forget some good foams.
 
The ProLine tire definitely has more detail, but with the stock SCX10 II body, I think you need the width and height of the Axial tires.

I totally agree. In fact, I think the kit tires are too small for the oversized XJ body and bumpers. Someone here on RCC just mounted Flat Iron XLs which are the largest 1.9 I'm aware of at almost 4.8 tall and 1.7 wide and those look perfect to me. The XJ body is huge, IMHO it needs a larger tire for aesthetics and performance. For me, the kit body was just too large to run and the stock bumpers just exacerbate the clearance issues. Scale without performance is pointless. We have a guy running 1.55s because he's a scale nerd and he stays frustrated in the rocks all day long.
 
I think I am going with the Vaterra TSL tires. I had them on my G6 before I sold it and I thought they were perfect. Right size (for me), great scale detail, and the stock 2-stage foams performed very well. I'm also not trying to spend $250 on a wheel/tire/foam combo. With the SSD beadlocks I am going to run, I will be at $115, which still seems really high when you think that these are wheels and tires for a TOY. I could buy my kid a brand new BIKE for that!
 
If you're trying to save money, run what you have and buy your kid a bike. This isn't one of those money saving hobbies. Stamp collecting, jogging, bird watching maybe. One of the keys to enjoying this hobby is to not track every red cent you spend on it.
 
The tires are pretty well proportioned to the body. But the body is too big IMO.

This hobby is as expensive as you want it to be. The best thing to do for budget wheels is buy used stuff, trade, or buy knockoff stuff from ebay. Used tires are also fine. They usually dont perform as well when they are new anyway.

It's not that I can't spare the money, it's just that I can't believe what the prices are for enthusiast-level parts. IMHO you get 90% of the performance for 50% of the price if you pick parts right. You sure pay a LOT for that top tier.

Sure, there are a lot of parallels with many other hobbies. In the example you gave, I would likely ask for a middle of the road option lol.

But seeing a $200 set of 1.9 wheels doesn't make me go "WOW!" it makes me go "WTF!" :lmao:

I'm with you 100%. Yeah the high end wheels look cool, but I just can't do it. I guess I'm not hardcore enough. But the cheap axial 1.9 beadlocks seam to be working just fine. The even cheaper exceed Maxstone 2.2 wheels are also holding up fine on my AX10.

Wait, so this is an argument for buying the cheap stuff right? Because once you put it on the rocks it's really hard to tell the difference, just like the wheels!!:lmao:

Ok, maybe I'm a whisky snob, but good scotch should be neat, not on the rocks.;-)

I'm more of a craft beer dork. "thumbsup"

I ended up buying the SSD Steel Beadlocks and Vaterra TSLs for my rig, in case anyone cares. Somewhat cost effective, and it should be a great looking and performing setup. The Vaterra TSLs are slightly narrower and maybe ever so slightly shorter. It's what I was after and the cost wasn't too hard to swallow.

I'm going to keep the stock tires/wheels for the really muddy runs.

I think you have that backwards. You'd want to run the TSLs in mud and the stockers in the dry. The kit tires would be absolutely horrible in mud or even wet sand.

They do nice in the wet though. Not a full hook, but with very controllable slip.

I'll be throwing on some KLRs next. They work very well on the rock around here, and scoot through the loamy and sandy stuff even better.
 
John, that is pretty good for just driving through a puddle. I guess I should revise my statement to say the kit tires perform poorly in DIRTY wet conditions like wet sand and mud. I've never driven on wet concrete or any other clean wet scenarios. If I see water it's always accompanied by sand, mud, or mossy crap.
