Anyone run SSD AR44 HD locker/gears? Can't figure out hex size, coming from 1 piece.

Hey all -

So I chewed up my stock Axial one piece ring gear that came with the builder's kit on my last run, so I ordered up some SSD upgrades. Got the SSD HD steel locker and axle gear kit with the HD steel ring and pinion gears. I haven't built two piece lockers yet as this is my first Axial, but it seems to me that these three tiny screws can easily snap, undermining the point of the hardened steel upgrade. I understand that AR44s have come stock with the 2piece setup in the past so it isn't exclusive to SSD, but what's everyone's thoughts on this? Non-issue?

And more immediately pressing, what size are the screws that SSD provides? My 2mm hex is too big (both Dynamite and Husky) and my 1.5mm hex turns the screw but ultimately rotates in the screw when any torque is needed (to tighten them at the bottom. I'm afraid they'll strip if I try any more. Smallest imperial size I have is 5/64 and that's too big as well. What do I need to pick up to properly screw these in, and are there stronger or more standard screws I can get? Currently I can tear down my whole truck with just 2-3 sizes of hex, would like to keep this standard!

My other SSD upgrades have been spot on so I went with them here as well, but I'm now thinking I should have probably grabbed those keyed Boom Racing lockers that offload the stress from the screws as I'm running 4S with a Puller Pro 2700kv.

Thanks in advance for the input!

It is 1.5mm.

SSD provides hardened screws that aren't as prone to breakage.

Why do none of my 1.5mm bits work when they work in every other 1.5mm screw on the truck?

I have them just barely snug and I reassembled the truck for now, does anyone have a confirmed working screwdriver for these?

Full SSD axles, shafts, lockers, gears, screws.
Solid and smooth, with one shim both were perfect

I just installed SSD axles as well and needed less shims than the stock Axial axles. I think I used one in the rear and zero in the front. The stock axles required 2 in the rear and 3 in the front, and the front always had a slight bind in one section of the gear which no shim would correct. Just goes to show you the quality of SSD axles.

im running a keyed gear sets i dont want to rely on those tiny screws i do get a bit of binding on the coast side of the gear set but i havent had any failures yet but im still skeptical of the design

We actually changed our lockers and gears to 6 bolts a couple of months ago. Just not updated the product pages yet just in case there are some older ones still about in stores.
Going forward all of our gears and lockers are 6 bolt only.

Hmm, bought both from amain last week and my locker/spool has 6 bolts but my gear only had 4 holes, I was wondering why that was. Any way to swap it out or buy one that’s guaranteed 6-hole? I’m just looking to bulletproof this area a bit.

Also, bought MIP drivers the other day, hoping that gets rid of my screwdriver size issues. Will report back when I’m off this work trip.
