Anyone use acorn nuts?

No, not the ones that fall from a tree. Instead of using the M4 nylon lock nut to hold your wheels on, has anyone tried using a 4mm acorn nut. By far a cheaper alternative than wheel covers, a much more scale appearance than the lock nut and could be beneficial to a crawler as its a rounded edge instead of a stub sticking past the nut (chance to get hung up).

The problems I see with acorn nuts keep me away.

#1. They are not easily found with ny-lock insert meaning loc-tite or nothing. Personally this is too "iffy" to chance.
#2. They stick out FURTHER and are LARGER than a nut and axle sticking out. They stick out more because the axle can not pass through the nut, they have to be enclosed by the end material, which could be as thick as 0.080". Also you need to find one that works...since some axles are long many acorns only accept so much thread.

I ran some on a scaler a while ago. They do look better then a nylon lock nut.
They didnt have nylon, I didnt use lock tite and they stayed on fine. I carried a wheel wrench and checked them ever couple of hours. I never lost one and they looked pretty good. Keep in mind it was a TLT axled 2.2 scale rig. I wasnt very hard on it and I dont think I would ever put them on a comp rig, but for a low budget scaler they are a nice cheap alternative."thumbsup"

I narrowed a set of axial hexes to 4.3mm, mounted the wheel with a washer, threaded the acorn nut on and measured the remaining amount on the axle end that needed to be cut. This was around 6mm or so. After cutting, I remounted and they seem to hold on pretty good.
