I want to buy something I can play with for a while, and buildover time. Whatis the best and cheapest base to start with? It has top be electric, and have parts readily available. Give me some ideas guys.

Well, you could go with a TXT-1- they are good crawlers out of the box (with locked diffs of course). I'd also suggest a TLT-1 if you're into smaller stuff. They are fun stock (although not great crawlers) but have the ability to be built to many different setups. You could always buy a Clod, too!

I would go with the Clod. Make a chassis, links, servo mounts and just buy some fair priced electronics and you're ready to go. You could always buy a Gecko chassis if you're not handy enough to make one yourself. It would be very capable and there will be lots of parts available. That's what I would go with.

I don't know about a cheap crawler! if there is one I want to know!

I love my new TXT, and it has only been modified a little bit. Here is what I have done:

1. JB-welded the diffs, (very easy to do) - $3
2. removed the rubber shock stops, (allows the shocks to be compressed all the way, which is ok for crawling but not ok if you plan to jump at all) - Free
3. Glued the tires to the rims. - Free (already had the tire glue)
4. Cut the tread to be more agressive. - Free
5. Added a pc fan to the Novak rooster (probably not needed if you run a Super Rooster) - $10
6. Added a reciever pack to help power my two Hitec HS 945MG's (probably not needed if you run a Super Rooster) - $30 reciever pack

and with the mods I have seen a great improvment over the stock TXT.

EDITED- added the prices, and #6

So how about just piecing one together from nothing. I figure if I can build a Jeep from scratch, I can do this too. I am a patient person, I can build. Here goes. Ayone got advice on steering, motor, and tranny?

i would just go with a clod tranny its the easiest to work with and i think fabbin a chassis is really easy just buy the 4 link kit from rc4wd and then ive seen chassis made outta plexi glass i actually just made another and i used a set of savge tvp's and cut them down a certain way and there perfect i think there llike 20 dollars for stock ones idk thats what i would do

It depends on whether you like driveshafts or none. If you like driveshafts go with a Juggy or TXT-1 tranny and axels. If you don't then get the Clod axels and they have the gearboxes right on them. As for motors go with Mag Mayhems, a Super Rooster, and Hitec servos. This will give you great relability and will work grwst on the rocks. If the Super Rooster is too much then you could get a cheap ESC but don't skimp on the servos.

i recently got a tlt, its far from finished but its pretty cool. if you wanted to get something to mess around with and modify over time it would be a great candidate imo, i would imagine soon people will start making and selling lwb kits for them.

other than that, a box stock txt or an aftermarket clod off ebay would be good bets.

pic of my mocked up tlt. its gonna get a custom chassis and all that.
