Better lipo charger?

OK, so I'm seriously considering lipos, as I'm running really old nicad stick packs and the cost of entry doesn't seem that much higher than nimh saddle packs. I'm looking seriously at the Hyperion EOS0606i, but wanted to see if there were some other suggestions from you all. I'd like something that is AC/DC or includes a power supply, as I have AC at most of the places I run and don't mind a bit bigger charger and don't want to shell out the additional cash for a PS. I'd prefer something that will balance lipos without having to purchase an external balancer as well. I'd also prefer something that can charge my 5 cell nimh reciever packs, 6 cell nitro starter packs, and transmitter AAs. So far, the Hyperion is the only charger I've found that does all that. Am I nuts for wanting an all-in-one solution, and are there other options?

Sorry IO don't have any alternatives but i recently purchased the Hyperion EOS0606i and love it. Does all my batteries (Nihm/LIPO) and more "thumbsup""thumbsup"
 
The Hyperion EOS0606i is a great charger. I have done a lot of research and talked to lot of lipo people, and have been told that is a great charger to start with. I'm ordering one with a couple of 3s lipo packs from Holmes Hobbies. Some of the reasons it is good are comes with an internal balancer and has adjustable charge amp discharge rates. Is AC/DC ready and can still charge all your old batteries."thumbsup" And do all that at $140
 
I have and use 2 different chargers.

The Novatech B8080 is easy as pie to use and usually the one I default to.

The Ballistic charger is pretty nice and for $69, it is an incredible value.

I prefer a lipo specific charger. Keeps it simpleer.
 
I'm looking for a new charger as well, I have a great power source so I was looking at the 5idp with the ability to add the LBA10 balancer if I get into Lipos which I'm not at this point.

I use that combo, and it's great. However I would suggest going ahead and getting the 6i anyway, because it charges up to 6amps, where the 5i is limited to 5 amps. Having the balancer internal is really nice too, and the cost difference is minimal.

I think the 6i is the best all around charger out there. The Superbrain 989 would be a close second, having built in power supply and it can also charge pretty much any battery out there. I believe you need an external balancer with it however.

Thanks for your response Miller Time, I agree the 6i is a minimal cost increase about $10 bucks I believe.

With that said, I just ordered one for myself, along with an LVC, and an Elite 2S 4800 from CBP. I got the DC only version though, from Aircraft World in Japan. I already have a 12amp 13.8v supply I use with my Intellipeak, so that'll do double-duty with the Intellipeak and Eos running off of it at the same time.
 
So what kind of rig would run a pack that large? I'm currently looking at going to a 1300 or 2100 mah 3S pack, but am also looking for a charger that will do lipos should I get back into electric buggies.
 
I have a Hyperion EOS0606i use it for my crawler lipos and my stadium truck lipos does them all great. A 6000mah pack it the peak of what the charger can handle at its full charging rate (6amp). If you want a lipo higher than 6000mah, is the only reason to get a more powerful charger.

I cant imagine needing another charger the 606I has everything one could ask for then some"thumbsup"

I thought, he mean charge at 1C ....4500mA x 11.1 = 49.95W .
If you use amp rate lower 1C on 4800 pack is work fine.;-)
 
First I've heard of that, and I'm not sure if that's right. The Maxamps combo includes a 606i charger and 3s 5000mAh battery, so it would seem odd that it wouldn't charge at 1c. The 5i most definitely will charge a 3s pack at 5 amps, I have that pair myself. Unless Hyperion reduced the specs on the 6i it should work too.

This charger is rated at 6S, 6A with a 50W power limit. It is important to understand the interaction between charge current and charge watts, as the maximum charge current will go down as the voltage of the battery being charged is increased. Hence the 6A charge rating on this charger does NOT mean all battery packs up to 6S can be charged at up to 6A! The maximum charge current for a particular battery pack is determined by the max power of the charger, divided by the voltage of the battery being charged. So a 6S Lithium battery (22.2V) can only be charged at a maximum of 2.25A on this charger (50/22.2 = 2.25A). A 2S Lithum battery (7.4V) can be charged at the full 6A charge rate (as can 7.2V NiMH batteries), but a 3S Lithium battery (11.1V) can only be charged at up to 4.5A (50/11.1 = 4.50A). To determine the maximum charge rate for a particular Lithium battery cell count, use the formula below:

Max Charge Rate = 50 / (3.7 x Cell Count)

In other words, it'll charge up to 6s, but most likely it'll be at less than 1C and take longer to charge than a charger that offers say, 250 watts, like the 610. I don't mind, because I don't plan on running more than 2s. At least for now. :)
