Broken gears before I even made it outside to try out my XR10

Here's how I broke the gears: I built the kit, wired up the electronics, adjusted the radio, set the model down on the carpet and went forward slowly. Then I backed up and stopped. Then I gave it full throttle in the forward direction and SNAP! I was thinking "you have to be freaking kidding me". A tooth snapped off two of the gears in less then 10 seconds.

I felt like I was back in the 80's when I got my Tamiya Frog for Christmas and spent a whole day building it only to take it outside and watch it get run over by a car. That was my fault, these poor quality broken gears from Axial are not.

I knew before I started this thread that a bunch of people are going to try to flame me and say that I didn't build the kit correctly, that it was my fault, and that I abused it. None of that is the case at all. I'm 35 years old and have been building and running RC cars since I was about 9 years old. I am very mechanically inclined. I run my own successful automotive business. I have a good knowledge of fasteners and how to use them correctly. I have all the correct tools for the job.

I read a bunch of threads before I assembled the kit, and followed all the pointers. Although....why should I have to? It doesn't say you need internet access on the box, and are required to spend 3 days on the RC forums as part of a normal build that will not break the first time you run it. It doesn't say you will need to buy an aftermarket set of gears, and a aftermarket set of larger bearings if you want it to last more then one hour of runtime. Why are the kits coming with motor plates with the wrong sized bearing holes in them? I'm sure I'm not the only one to notice how sloppy the bearings are in the motor plate? It's a design error, period. The bearing housings spin inside the motor plate, just look at the bearings from the outside of the transmission as you turn an axle. If the bearings are failing as often as they are, why is there no fix from Axial for it yet? Look at how the gears failed, the teeth just broke off. That didn't happen from the gears not having the correct mesh. They are just cheap. I thought this was supposed to be a pro level kit right out of the box?

I am running two Novak 45's, a 3s 1750mah 45c lipo battery, and a Mamba Max, with a Punk dig switch. Front pinion is a 14 tooth, rear is 13 tooth. I don't think any of those items are beyond the recommended limits for the kit.

By the way, I could care less about spending the money to upgrade the kit. What I am pissed about is all the kids who will be saving up all their money to buy this kit, only to have it break on them in 5 minutes. Did no one actually try out the production kit before they started shipping?

Sometimes metal gears are just faulty. Most are not having any problems with the replacements. I know the failure can be a bummer but stick with it it's worth it. "thumbsup"

I will stick with it. I have no choice now, I already spent twice what the kit cost for battery, charger, motors, tires, dig, servo, etc... :lmao:

Public safety isn't government controlled like 1:1's.

True, and obviously no one stands to be killed if their RC car fails.

I guess only most of the kits break, not all of them. Wait.....that still isn't very comforting for everyone buying the kit for $300 a pop, with potentially defective parts in it.

All kits have weaknesses. The problem is, this truck is so new, no one has good solutions yet.

Not saying you did something wrong, but I have BEAT mine, destroyed the stock bearings, broke avid bearings, ran a whole comp with destroyed avids still inside making tons of noise, and have stalled the motors in both axles in comps with mine, and my stock gears are still in it.

Well for one the gears are made from powdered steel, probably the cheapest shit they coud get their hands on

Your right it is a shame that there has not been a real good fix but only time will tell if Axial will fess up to the issue. This is my first Axial crawler but I can tell you that when mine broke I called axial and I had new parts in the mail box 3 days later. Even though Axial sent me more of the stock 8MM bearings I decided to do the 9MM mod, Guess I will keep the old bearngs incase I need them for something else or incase someone else needs them.

Mine broke in the first 3 minutes, I emailed axial the pics of the gears and got a call the next day. Axial over night shipped the new gears, bearing and rear housing(even though it was fine). Put it together with the 9mm bearings($14) burned up motors and the gears are still fine.

I was pissed when I bought my losi and had the same kinda problems,, but they sent the parts that broke right out for free.. I have not had any little boxes show up from axial to say oh my bad the the $300 kit you pre ordered and waited for two months for is got the biggest crap bearings on planet earth in and the gears are about 50 % ,here is some that we have improved on ..let us know how they work !!!!!

vp bushing and stock gears about 2 hrs run time. no problems mine is one of the first preorders . pulled front lower links and bent a rear axle.

Sound like faulty bearings. Mine had a litte play out of the bag in the trash they went. Vp bushings went in, now it is 9mm upgrades. Now its smooth like butter.

Who are all you guys contacting directly? (yes I know axial lol)
Mine made it 2 courses before letting go in the front. I was excited after I finished the first with no issues. Thought I got one of the good ones lol. But then again my run was only 3:30 long lol

Running novak 45's on 2 cell lipo and rooster esc

honestly....ok axial f-ed up....mveing on.....im running the stock gears...but did the 9mm bearing swap....bound up my rig enough to debead my tires and scare the judge.....didnt break a thing....so ok yes its supposed to be a comp ready kit........its 300 dollars at the high side people! ....so if you bought a type r civic took it to the track wih no upgradesand got your ass handed to you would you bitch because the 200k ferrari beat you?.................case in point shit breaks...yes the sloppy motor plate is causeing the issue....if you would have done a tiny it of research on here you would have known its an issue...and to do the 9mm swap...no amount of bitching is onna cause someone to use a time machine to fix the problem....any other issues with the rig? i dont think so......sorry man im gonna have to be the dickhead about this get over it upgrade to new bigger bearings or buy a losi....garaunteed their is more issues with that rig.........anyways if your scared of doing a couple small mods to mae it bullet proof.....maybe you need to re-examine why this is a HOBBY......its a f-in toy car for petes sake

dude your analogy for the type r civic makes no sense at all, your basically comparing apples to oranges.

Just because someone has came up with a no brainer fix doesn't mean Axial shouldnt buck up to a problem they have brought upon themselves. Axial could have kept their dumb little green gate markers and put that cost into some better bearings or even a reamer so that they could hold some type of tolerance on the motor plate.

Just because the Xr10 is supposed to be a competition level rig doesnt mean everyone who buys it is planning on competing. Oh and by the way, i have not had one single problem with my Losi, not even a single worm gear issue:roll:
