Brushed motor selection

I know this probably has been asked a million times but I did a ton of searches and can't seem to find a distinct answer.

I have the kit and I plan to build it with a brushed motor. I know people have said the way the RTR comes, it's geared too high.

My first remedy is to not use the included pinion but get a 11T one. But for the motor should I mimic the RTR's 35T? Should I go even higher with the turns to make it even slower, e.g., 45T or even a 55T?

I've seen people use things like a 20T brushed but that's what confuses me as wouldn't that make it go faster? (I believe it was brushed but not 100% sure.)

Holmes crawlmaster sport in 16t is what I use with the 11 tooth pinion And a hw 1080. I’ve heard that you can get a 10 tooth pinion if you use one of the rebuildable motors like a Holmes expert or pro motor. You just have to use the other set of mounting holes to get it to fit. Definitely get an 11 tooth pinion to start with don’t use the 14 tooth the drag brake is pretty much no existent with the 14 tooth. The gears are a 32 pitch. The transmission kind of sucks to get in an out so try to get the setup right in the first try.

Thanks for the info. OK, this is where my confusion comes in.

A 16T will spin faster, given the same voltage, so shouldn't you want a higher turn motor? Higher than the RTR's 35T motor?

I understand reducing the tooth count on the pinion will reduce the gearing but then we are using a faster RPM motor which seems to be counter-intuitive. And thus my confusion. :|

The Holmes 16t is a 5 slot motor which is about the equivalent of the 35t 3 slot stock motor.

Yes 5 slot motors are less turns than 3 slot. It confused me also. But in my opinion a cheaper 16t 5 slot is better than a decent 35t 3 slot. Smoother low end and better drag brake. J.H. Explains this in a few YouTube vids. I personally am running a hw 1080 esc with a reedy 16t 5 slot and an 11t pinion.
