Calling All DJ's

So I come from a musical background (composition), produce music, and am a certified audio engineer. I would like to add DJ'ing to the arsenal.

Ive been playing around with the free version of Virtual DJ for the last couple of days, watching tutorials, and doing a lot of reading. As with any software, without hardware integrated in youre prety limited.

Initially I thought it would be an easy transition with my background, but am finding out that while I can relate to a lot of the controls on a DJ mixer, I am somewhat dumbfouned as to the operation.

Just as with recording/producing, Im sensing that it will be easier to learn with actual hardware vs strictly software.


What Im looking for here is advice on gear, tips, tricks, links, etc. Anything would be greatly appreciated.

My brother plays with djing on his computer, he has some form of a digital dj, I have watched him play with it and it is pretty cool, it ahs taken him almost a year to figure out the majority of it in how it works, I'll tell him about this thread and have him jump in and tell ya about it.

If you plan on spinning wax, there are lots of tutorials on Utube for DJs.

What system are you using? I don't know the name, but Apple makes a good one. It is not the best but it can mix ipod and video which is nice. It might just be called Idj:lmao: Are you lookig for a table too? I've always like Poineer dj mixers. They're not the best but they work and can find parts to fix them.

Skeeno- yea Ive been watching a lot of those. And suprisingly theyre relatively informative...

H2O- right now Ive just been playing around with the free version of VDJ on a PC. Dont have any DJ gear yet, plenty of recording/producing gear though. Ideally Id like two tables & a mixer. I ran across the Apple set up youre reffering to yesterday but dont want to be limited to an iPod for hook up. Plus I dont know if it would work trying to incorperate it with a PC.

So as of right now I am using a set of gemini pt-2000's and a kl19 mixer serato control vinyl and a umix 44 sound card (I would recomend the maya 44 usb, but I could get a hold of one)

As for programs virtual dj is the best on the market. Get the full version if you get some tables. My suggestion is type dj into craigslist and see what comes up. If you have your heart set on turntables I would recomend what I have or technics 2000's (mine are based off of those) But if you are starting out and want to do this proffesionaly I would say get some cdj's.
