Looking for the cheapest way to build a crawler. I would like a axial as I have a ax10 and having interchangeable parts would be great.. but I want to make my own crawler..everything I have found so far is $800 Canadian! I like greathobbys.com but once I am done with my axial kit and electronics I’m. $800 deep.. I have read that guys build a crawler from eBay parts for half that piece.. how??

My uderstanding is...

The redcat everest 10 has many parts that interchange with Axial parts, might be a option to get you rolling.

The Axial Honcho is a decent starter budget rig. Comes RTR and when you go to upgrade you have an Axial SCX10ii. A little more now will pay back big later. There are some short falls of the honcho with the one piece axles and a few other things, but it is a great rig get started.

Since you want parts compatibility with the ax10, you'll need to buy a 1st generation Scx10 ($300 new), not an Scx10 ii. If you are willing to have about 90% parts compatibility with minor modifications, maybe consider a Redcat Everest 10 ($135 new). Other options would be to look for a used 1st generation scx10 or another used ax10.

If your gona scratch build a crawler from parts you need some axles a frame a skid and a transmission in my opinion axles are exspensive to build 20 for the gears 20 for the locker and the shafts some are cheap some arent and then theres the axle housing it self lockouts and bearings knuckles and chubs i guess around $100 for the rear and 150 for the front ive seen sets of redcat axl3s go for around 50 on ebay ive also seen wraith or scx10 axles complete for cheap but its rare the reason i piece build instead of buying kits is i get exsacly what i want its only cheaper because i dont buy parts twice your gona need links yyou can make those you need rod ends drive shafts a.body body mounts wheels and tires 12mm hexs a bunch of hex pins a screw kit ebay sells just about every part from high end to cheap junk some cheap stuff will hold up.some wont you can build a.kit cheap but usaly cost more than a cheap kit i dont think 800 is alot for a axial but i do think its alot for a.stock axial if you can find all the upgrad3d parts for that i would say your doing good or get a cheap e10 and slowly upgrade to axial parts i love my e10 its one of my favorits but its not.ch3ap to upgrade evrything to axial parts but you dont need to ether the biggest down side is its old tecnology basicly a old ax10 copy

Not sure how prices change for Canadian buyers on eBay but I've seen some roller scx10s on eBay for cheap.

For a first build, your best option IMO is a first gen SCX10. You can find parts all over the place, TONS of intel and information out there, aftermarket support and parts availability is great. Good start to get your feet wet. For example, I have a SCX10 kit that is unbuilt. Its been on the shelf for a couple years now waiting for the "next" project. Which is now going to be the G6 body from that kit on a new SCX10II kit build. So, minus the body and cage, that entire kit will be for sale on the forum sometime soon. Keep your eyes open and you can get some deals. Depends on if you want RTR or want to build it from scratch, too. If you LIKE to build, get a kit, very satisfying. If you just want to try one to see if you like actually running a crawler, look for an RTR. Also, if you decide you don't like it and want to sell it, no issues typically unloading an SCX. A LOT of your cost savings can be in the electronics. A simple brushed motor/ESC combo can be pretty cheap whereas a brushless setup can be more costly. Radio gear also. Can be a simple 2 ch pistol setup to a full blown high dollar one. Start simple, go from there. Have fun!

I just picked up a ax10 scorpion a few days ago and so hooked on crawling! I’d love to find another one.. the thing i don’t like about the scx10 is the 1.9 tires. I want to have something equil to the ax10. Can the scx10 compete with scx10 ?

And I totally want to build a truck from a kit

You can always do a Wroncho. AR60 axles from the wraith / bomber under the scx10.2 kit chassis.
Then use a pick-up cab without the bed.

I bought a Vaterra Ascender kit on Amazon.ca for 400$, add about 150$ for electronics and you’ve got a good rig.

Yes a scx10 can compete with a ax10. Depending on which ax10 you have, (wide axles or narrow) the scx10 can out perform the ax10 in certain areas.

Put 2.2 tires and a small body and have fun. Gear mods will work in both rigs.

My scx10 based 2.2 trail truck.
