Had the same thing with the boat last week! A simple Chevy V8 thermostat and a couple exhaust boots for the wet exhaust and they want $850 to do the job and keep the boat for 10 days! The parts cost me $150 and it took me an hour and a half to do the job. The next time you need something like that done buzz me and I'll through my hands in for help. I was a certrified mechanic for a couple of years and still enjoy it when needed. Besides, with the warrenty system that places like Autozone and Murrys has it sometimes pays off to do the job your self once because from then on you never have to pay for some of the parts again!

I used to be a marine mechanic...its not like normal mechanics, especially right now. Anytime the weather is 70+ all the a$$hole customers want it now...it got tiring for all of us and they'd mention theyd pay a premium to get done first...thinking an extra $50 for a large job was going to cut it...nope.

It wasn't like that. They never water tested the damn thing after they did insurance work for me at the end of last season and there were things that should have been fixed then under the claim. Since I have a Volvo sterndrive most parts are not stocked and have to come from places like Florida and the west coast. problem is solved now and the fun can start again so real harm done other then I had to hitch a ride to Jobbienooner instesd of taking mine.

I hear you, but you'd be shocked what insurance companies are against...when I first started everything we could find they'd approve, as I grew older the insurance guys got more picky, especially the AAA, AllState guys...they would sometimes hire mechanics from other marinas to check we weren't over-exaggerating.

Volvo's are a pain here. They are fine units, just parts are as you mentioned so darn limited. Also working on them costs more...I know nearly every marina that will touch them has a Volvo and a Merc rate, sad to say. Again its because of their lower "popularity" so instead of all 5-10 mechanics being able to work on them, only 1 usually does and his $ rate is usually higher.

Man Jobbienooner...I remember going to that. You should try some Put-In Bay trips...those were more fruitful for eye candy.

Gary, make sure you check all your dimensions and stuff for the rules. I know the Nats guys do full tech way more than we even bring tech up. Also study those rules...gotta find every option and way to win it big!

Farmer, same goes to you bud!
