COULD ADMIN MOVE TO 1.9 PLEASE? Classic G wagon build

I’ve been looking to build one of these for a long time, my Dad had one for a long time - not one of these modern day versions it was a 1987 in Colorado Beige.

The chassis is going to be a bit of a home-brew using bits that are left over and have already fabricated some bits for it. I was originally going to do a Nissan patrol using a loops body but my heart wasn’t in it.

I will be taking the hideous Team Raffee Co body and cutting it to bits to get it somewhere near the classic shape.

Getting some parts together. The yota is axles seem about as close as you can get to the original axle

And to try and move things along a little I’ve started to weather the fuel tank / receiver box

Sprinkled some iron filings on and will leave it out in the rain....

Change in plan......

I’m waiting for the release of the new Vanquish products VFD and origin chassis / possible offset axles for this build.

The SCX10II chassis may get cut up for a pimpincrawler style truggy build......

Hoping to hear very soon on the VP release dates

OK, scrap that idea, I was thinking the VFD would be available separately - but not for a while.

Continuing with the original plan of a custom SCX10ii chassis, I’ve mounted the gearbox as low and forward as possible with some mounts I made up of steel plate.

GMade RSD’s can drop the springs easily for a full droop setup, hopefully the wheels will tuck up nicely for that scale look.

This is just roughly thrown together for now:

Had a solid couple of days fabricating more of the chassis and body mounts. Made these up from some steel plate, they will house the batteries as well as be used for mounting the body

Ignore the red links, just playing with wheelbase to get the wheels in the arches nicely.
Rough cut of the battery strap mounts.

Admittedly, I’ve now seen snakepitRC’s g wagon, damn coincidence as I was trying to be original with this. Struggled with trying to find a replacement for the raffee front bumper, it had to be metal and as this rig is going to need some assistance to crawl here and there I needed a winch. Then I saw the snake pit G and the LC70 front bumper works so very well.

Cue the chopping up of the metal LC70 bumper and working a way to get it to fit correctly.

It needs a bit of reinforcement...... think I may need to remake the bracket with a double hole mount to help prevent it from moving on the inevitable impacts

Thanks!

The bodywork of the team raffee G is rather unsightly, the wheelarches are way too wide, the front bumper hideous and the bonnet (hood for you guys over the pond) laughable!

I’ve spliced the centre out of the wheelarches and plastic welded them back together...

The bonnet (hood) has been levelled. Had to plastic weld some styrene in.

Just getting the fuel tank located in the right place where it clears the interior

I don’t want to loose the shock towers on the rear and jeopardise the flex. The SCX10II chassis is really capable and while this is aimed as being more on the scale end of the spectrum I want it to perform well too so I had to cut into the interior a little.

So to hide this I’ve made a box out of styrene sheet and plastic-weld. Not sure if I should make this a long range fuel cell or a rifle case. Any suggestions??

A quick mock-up and this thing flexes very well indeed for a scaler!

I’m really not a fan of the AMG style front grille and I’m looking to make something more classic looking. I’ve taken the grille from the kit and cut the centre out but maintained the mounting holes for ease and accuracy of fitment. I had a spare D90 slatted grill from a previous project and I’ve cut it to pieces and glued it into the centre section of the modified AMG grille. I’ve then taken some Tamiya hilux headlight buckets and lenses and modified those to fit.

Looks hilarious, but I have a plan.... bear with me!

The yellow lenses don’t look right..... clear it will be!

I’ve made a little strut brace for the shock towers as there’s a bit of flex in the plastic. Ive just used some 5mm tube and tapped a thread into the ends so the M3 screw secures nicely.

It’s currently being painted..... I’ll post some nice pics soon on the way the grill has turned out, very happy with how it turned out even though these pics look hilarious!

Love the details in the Tamiya lights [emoji7]

I had to file the indicator recesses off the lower portion of the headlight surround so that it’s more in line with the classic G Wagon rather than the AMG version.

That does look really good! I got an old Nikko body on the shelf but never liked it because of the AMG look. I am not sure if I have your skills in recreating that grille though ;-)

I searched for a deal on the nikko body for absolutely ages and eventually gave up. When the Team Raffee Co body first came out I laughed and swore I’d never buy one - LOL!

This is proving very time consuming, but well worth it and enjoyable so far.
