Comcast Wants To Turn Home Routers Into Public Wi-Fi Hotspots

Its only on the XB3 dual band phone/internet routers. If you do not want the hotspots turned on you can have it disabled, and the only people that can use the hotspots must have a Comcast account.

Chris, can you elaborate on the disabled statement ?

I called comcast and wanted to opt out or have it disabled. I was told they could shut it off so others couldnt receive the hot spot but that also meant I would not have wifi either. I would still have internet, just not wireless. Or, I could buy my own router to have wifi still which comcast would not be able to broadcast the free wifi signal from....

From what I understood, there was no opt out or disabling the comcast router and still retain your wifi signal for your use only.

It is on for you and all other comcast customers or you buy your own router.

From what we were told the hotspot portion can be turned off and doesn't affect the personal WiFi. It depends again on what modem/router you have as only the XB3 modems have the hotspot capabilities. The standard D3 modems can have the personal WiFi disabled and do not have the hotspot capability. This was just launched so I'm sure there are bugs to work out still.

And my point (if we're on the same page) is why am I going to get in trouble for using someone's Comcast free public hotspot wi-fi router signal?

I guess I could read the article...

Edit: Alright then. Thanks Dud.

Edit again: Then mix it up with that certain speed for certain customers and that gets kinda interesting.

I am not saying you should or could get in trouble I simply ask if its leagal & where the lines are (I don't know)

I am just paranoid about the wolf of big brother in the sheeps clothing of free & easy wifi.

"Big Brother" doesn't worry me so much as "_______ Trash Cousin" dragging me down for something he did.
That would be my issue. Bubba looking at kiddie porn while feeding off my hotspot.....who's getting raided? I am.

Comcast is available in my area, alot of people have tried to do the basic modem with their own router only to be told by comcast it will not work and they must lease one directly.

Our McDonalds has free wifi. If you pick up the signal and open a web browser you have to click a button agreeing to terms. I have no idea what they are. Our Target stores are the same. I'm sure there are others. I could probably walk around the store looking at Redtube on my iPod and nothing would happen. Or, maybe they have certain sites blocked. Again, don't know.

A non comcast router works with comcast service, I do not know about the modum part but my guess is that would have to be comcast to work with there services.

You can have your own modem and router or you can lease them, thats up to you. To take advantage of the speeds you will want a D3 modem. Again the hotspot can be disabled and is only available on the Arris 862/852 wireless gateway. You can turn it off and still have the personal WiFi enabled, it is a seperate from the hotspot. You can only access the hotspot by logging into your Comcast account so its not an open network for anyone. To disable the hotspot you need to log in to your account, go to users and preferences, service address, manage Xfinity WiFi, and click disable Xfinity WiFi home hotspot. Hope this helps those that dont want it on.

Maybe it was a configuration issue in either of the devices causing an ip conflict. But anyhow the non comcast router would not allow anything wired/wireless to communicate to the modem (leased unit non wifi+phone). The modem worked fine by itself. The router (linksys e1200 owned) worked properly when used behind at&t modem.

Lady even had comcast come out twice, first told her modem was bad and swapped it. Second guy said that modem doesnt do wifi (true) but didnt offer any advice

This is good to know, even the Comcast techs do not seem to know the answer to this.

Do you know if your old AT&T account was PPOE? With Comcast, make sure your WAN interface on your router is set to DHCP and it does not require a username and password.

I tell you, the things are already listening in.

We talk a new Benz, and commercials appear for things like Depends.
We surmise a dessert surprise, and get ads- on tooth glue for grads.
If I ask my chosen for a kiss, we get adverts for counselors in bliss.

I'm a Comcast tech...

I kind of figured that. Is there a reason one person told my brother it could not be turned off? Maybe it is not the same model you were talking about, or the guy just wanted to get out of there? I just find it odd how many different explanations I have heard about whether you can or cannot disable this. I have Comcast business though so I have not had to deal with it personally.
