custom fabbed armor

I decided to join in the fun and start customizing my crawer. Here's some parts I fabbed up for it.

rear bumper and tire carrier

rock sliders

front and rear skids

It's nothing pretty, I just wanted it to be functional. Hopefully, if nothing breaks, i'll get to test it all out tomorrow... I've been having a run of bad luck. I already broke two pins in the axels and the pitman arm snapped on me yesterday. But oh well, it's all part of the fun of rock crawling...

2 words....tummy tuck....is a fun mod to do and definately gets more ground clearance....

You can make a new pitman arm with some steel rod stock and a 3/8" 1/4" drive socket cut down.

Axle pins, just jb weld the whole collar to the shaft and fixes that.

The fab work looks good, but i'm guessing you've not wheeled much with the spare or do alot of flat wheeling because these things backflip enough as it is...

yep, i'll be doing that as soon as i get my replacement chassis. that way if i screw things up, i'll have something to fall back on. I'm tired of dragging that belly everwhere. hey, by the way, how did you mount the circuit boards after the tummy tuck? did you just lay them snugly under the cover or actually screw them down to somthing??

yeah, i saw your post about using the socket for the pitman arm... only problem is that i don't have access to a welder. so, for now i'm testing out using an eye screw screwed into the plastic cylinder that the pitman arm broke off of. so, far it's holding up. and for the broken pins, i just made replacements from an old 14 gauge bicycle spoke i had laying around.

i haven't wheeled it with the spare tire yet, but you're right, there'll probably be too much weight back there. so i may not use it, i totally dig the way it looks though :mrgreen:

Where did you find the material for the skids and bumper? I've been trying to find thin guaged aluminum, but I can't find any.

i got it all at home depot. for the skids i just used the thinnest aluminum sheets that they had. i don't remember the guage but it's very easy to work with and still stong enough to hold it's shape when being drug over the rocks. for the bumper and sliders, i used some offset angle aluminum that's like 1/16 of an inch thick. i also saw the materials at lowes, they seemed to have a better selection too.
