ive been thinking of cutting the fenders on my 96 bronco xlt and putting on some flexi fenders.ive asked on fte board but haven gotten any answers so i thought i would ask here as i know alot of you guys wheel the real thing too. has anyone done it and have pics ? does it look hack ?

thanks

i cut the fenders on my suburban with a die grinder and left it alone, i dont like fender flares though. if thats what you mean by flexy fenders... ill get pics up soon. as soon as i find them

I've done a few. I'll give you my experiences and you can go from there. I've used a sawzall, and it's a little too uncontrolable. I've used cutoff wheels, which seemed to work better but still not a nice cut. Tried my portaband with similar results as the sawzall, just more awkward to use. I think the best method would be air shears. Cut and leave some extra meat. Then go back with a hammer and dolley(?) and bend a nice flange down. That would be a cleaner edge. Also if you have fender trim, preferably metal, you can bend it to contour to the newly cut fender and cover up a rough cut. The thing that always annoyed me was the 2 different layers.

I always use a zip cut on a grinder. I can cut very accurate radiuses and it requires next to no finish work. If you dont like the sharp edge, you can also weld a piece of round bar to the edge. It also strengthens the fender alot. I would skip the flexy flares.

EtypeR's truck I hope the pic shows up.

On my ranger I used tin snips mad for cutting circles. After cut I rolled the edg under. I don't really like the look of those flex fender things.

Use a body air saw. Basically a scaled down sawzall. That is what they are made for. Look on Ebay in auto body tools.

If you are covering the edges with glass, who gives a rat's a$$ how clean the cuts look? Shears, plasma, grinder, etc will all produce a cut good enough to grind/sand down clean enough for an edge that will never be seen.

I use black door edging from pep boys, 12' roll for like 7.00 makes a perfect clean edge over the cut

HEHE............exactly!! I have done the same myself.:)

Here is my truck that Cole tried linking to... The server that I had it hosted on is down, so I put it on my other site.

I used a jigsaw to cut some of my fenders, and a air grinder with a cut off wheel for the others. The Jigsaw worked the best with very smooth cuts and exellent control. I also used pliers to roll the edges back, for a factory look.

Virgin Bronc............so clean, so pure!

For the love of all that is sacred and holy...............DON'T CUT IT just to throw on some 33s!!!!!:x

Plasma's nice but if you don't have it you can do a fine job with a sabre saw and a fine tooth blade or you might want to use a die grinder. Smooth any waves with a die grinder and/or flap wheel on a 4" grinder.

Put down masking tape to protect the paint and allow you to draw your cut lines.
