I havent done a build thread in probably 2 years-ish, and to be honest the last one i did was my first build and well.... it was pretty crappy. Since then I've built a few more trucks, bought some new tools, learned a lot more, and IMH(umble)O just got better.

Now before i get started i want it to be known that this build is close to complete, or as complete as they ever are... After i got things to where i wanted them (mostly) i broke the truck down to go over nuts, bolts, etc. and loctite everything that needed it, as well as get pics as i put it back together. That being said from start to tentative finish this should be a pretty quick read, granted things will most likely change over time and as i said.... close to complete and almost ready to compete.

Most parts for this build are harvested from past builds, with the exception of some special parts. At least they are special to me... You'll find out why later.

Its kinda funny and the timing is pretty cool that this build is ready to be published now. Before I say why, you should know this truck is built as my class 2 and to run Shred the Ledge (possibly lone wolf class). I had built another tuber that I ran at this years Back to Our Roots STL in Vermont, but won a CBERCFAB Switchback Chassis at that event and decided to rebuild the STL truck for the remaining 2 events. Also the theme of this truck has been planned since Christmas when my wife bought my driver and passenger for me. So why is it funny you might be asking yourself as I ramble on. Well, i guess if ya wanna know, your gonna hafta just keep reading....

Re: Da Villian

Well where do i start??? How about a pile of parts. Heck every build needs a pile of parts right? I mean where would we be without a pile of parts to start things off with.

Nah how about a couple pics of my messy cluttered workshop (term is used loosely). Its more like a small section of my basement with strategically placed benches and tools. Truth be told I actually cleaned it up a bit today before i started breaking the truck down.

This is where my scale garage will be some day..

Just an overview of my "man cave"

Image deleted... there's to much of a spoiler in this pic....

1 work table for soldering, building, etc. Tig welder and welding table.

The 2 newest addition to my toys, err i mean tools. mini lathe and a 6040 cnc router

And lastly, what the heck... a few parts...

Well Ill be back with more, either later tonight or tomorrow. I wanna get back to putting my truck back together.

Re: Da Villian

I'm working on a rig for STL as well. Interested to see what you threw together.

If you havent attended a STL before, best advice I can give you is "build it tough". this is not your average trail run..

Trag.

let me edit that... "Build it STUPID Tough"...

Lol. I got that feeling after reading the description on the event site. I've upgraded just about everything possible. I'm excited to push everything to the max.

You have super nice toys, I mean tools. Wish I had half the fun stuff in that room.

thanks, it wasnt easy convincing the wife to "agree" to most of it. but... its here so i must of done something right.

honestly this is an endurance run. drive smart and you wont have many problems. skip gates that are to tough etc. idk what your driving but if i was to invest in anything, itd be a good servo winch. we winch A LOT. i have a hard time building anything under 10 or 11 pounds so those 3racing and rc4wd winches just dont cut it for me. although they make a nice fairlead :-). look forward to seeing you next weekend.

well back to building so i can post more pics..

Re: Da Villian

Well got some more parts put on. Time for a smoke break. Sounds like a good time to add a post.

So the name of the rig is Da Villain. Woulda been nice had i spelled it right in the title. Maybe I can change that. As i said earlier its kinda funny that at this time its ready to be published as Suicide Squad is coming out or just came out idk which. So anyone who knows Trevor Rushford, knows hes a batman fan, well so am I. My favorite "superhero" of all time. Anyone who loves a superhero has to love the villain. My wifes villains of choice for me for christmas this year was Harley Quinn and the Joker, so like I said this has been themed for months no, long before I knew about the movie. Maybe you caught the spoiler in the first set of pics, maybe not. Well enough ramble we all know you really wanna see the pics...

The body. This body ran Field and Forest STL for me last year. Since about a week ago its been cut into what i always wanted it to be. Axial Jeep Nukizer pimped.

Any real Jeep looks better topless and the Nukizer is no exception, but if your'e gonna go topless you gotta have a nice roll cage.

As I said I plan for this not only to run STL but to also be my class 2 for when i run with the EPA guys. Class 2 needs an interior...

A drop bed doesnt hurt either.

Not normally a selfie guy, but she happened to be hanging out handing me parts when i started snapping pics and she insisted on one of us. Me and my Kiwi..

Lastly, a close up of the chassis rails. the only thing i did was weld the shock mounts on. everything else is a bolt on part.

The cage work and shock mounts are 3/16 brake line. I normally use solid rod, but with interior, drop bed, figures, etc. for class 2 i needed to find a way to drop some weight. I'm sure ima bend some stuff. The welding was done almost primarily with silicon bronze tig rod, a little 7018 here and there when needed. I gotta say that bronze flows so nice on this gauge materials. it's more like tig brazing then welding.

Hope your'e enjoying it so far.

Another day, been making a few changes as I put it back together. Nothing major, mostly wiring and stuff. So where did i leave off? I dont think ive actually shown anything built, or should i say put together...

Well gotta show a few more parts before i move ahead and show it assembled, since these are the parts that go on first.

This is my winch mount for my front winch. Im running a TZI up front, I love this winch, Id love it more if the guy would actually get back to me about replacement internals. I spoke to him and he has them, I said I wanted a set and well... the mount will attach to the side of the chassis and ill run some kind of tube up to the front to go through the hawse. havent figured that part out yet.

Im sorry these isnt gonna be the most detaile of pics, but I didnt feel like taking this setup apart, youll understand them though. Maybe after its all said and done ill grab a couple pics of the unused prototypes and give more detailed images, unfortunatly i dont have any of those taken atm. Basicly ive been using toyzuki motor mount for awhile and like it alot. however when i first started building i used a skid that was wider than a stock scx10 skid and didnt realize it. So I needed a slightly wider motor mount. quick drawing in CAD and boom, Delrin mount. Thats a Holmes 3300kv stubby in there.

I know I just said I was using a different skid and had to make changes based on it, however I wasnt able to actually use that skid as things progressed, but I still needed one that size, so again a quick drawing again and I've got the skid I need. Now I've been eyeing the Dinky split skid for awhile and the GR7, however they either arent being made anymore or just not available. Running a class 2 with a full interior and full figures i need all the space i can get. I know Toyzuki also makes a small transfer case but its open gears and the way i run my rigs I dont want anything open to the crud. I do like however how he eliminates the idler gear since i run curries and my axles rotate in the wrong direction. Since necessity is the mother or invention(or something like that) my stupid low profile transfer case has been born. Now I said I had to remake my skid, that's because I made the transfer case just a little to short to sit my esc next to it, so my offset skid came into existence. I had made a different skid first that actually let the transfer case sit even lower, but the way it sits now I've got more than enough clearance. once I've gotten that far putting it back togetehr I'll show you a pic of my clearence. I also plan to make a forward motor mount of my own to eliminate the large spur gear, but that will come later. So without further adieu...

As we all know space starts to get limited, and I was trying to figure out how to keep a from bumper close to the body, and still have lights and a fairlead. I have $20 in gift certs from ScalerFab, but I'm being cheap atm with work being slow, so i checked his designs and made something similiar. I'll probably buy one of his at a later date just to use up the certs. So again, break out the CNC, grinder, and the welder and viola..

For anyone who doesnt know 1.5mm drivers do not make good prybars. Not the prettiest weld, off centered, and its a little shorter, but it still works. The holes for the bumper weren't drilled at exactly the right place...

Well now that I've shown a bunch of parts I should probably get a pic or five of how its starting to come together.

Again I hope your'e enjoying it as much as im enjoying building it. I'll be back later today or tomorrow with some more updates.

Trag.

Well the trucks almost completely back together. need to make a couple of minor adjustments and add some detail things but she seems to be running good, and although everything didnt come out perfect, Im happy with the current progress.

I mentioned that my transfer case was low but i had to raise it on the skid to get the clearance i wanted for my esc to sit next to it. Even with it raised ive got like 6 or 7 mm of clearance under the bars my interior sits on.

Drop bed, electronics box, and rear winch installed. Wiring run rather clean, the pics of the wiring dont do it justice.

Ended up having to hack up my interior pan a bit to make some changes I wanted to. Ill end up redoing it at a later date. Before I ran primarily 3s I used to keep a med size 2200 in the car to run my winch and lights separately from the main power. Well recently I've been running small(1300)/med(2250) 3s batteries and running everything from 1 battery. Well they die to quickly that way it seems. So on this build I decided to go back to separate batteries. I normally try to keep batteries low, but that wasn't completely possible this time around. I was able to keep the passenger side rock slider open for the battery to run the winch and lights. ill use the main power battery in the cockpit in the box behind the seats.
I made the center console open up for 2 reasons. Reason 1, I put a low voltage meter inside to keep track of the power on the winch/light battery. Reason 2, I have a 4 channel radio but wanted to keep 1 channel available for lights (which appear to not be working atm) and since I don't use my rear winch often i had an idea. I gave my son a winch controller to use off his radio since his original controller was a 3 pos toggle switch. for/off/rev. I randomly found this switch and though hmm... I put this switch inside the console and now the switch operates both winches. front/off/rear. 2 winches, 1 channel, and 1 controller. i still have full control from my controller, however the switch determines which winch gets the power.

In case your'e wondering I did figure out my winch line for the from winch. I took an old cover from a bicycle brake line and cut it to length and bent it appropriately to go from driver side rock slider to front hawse. not the best pic but you get the idea. it does seem a little tight at times, but only time will tell...

As she sits right now with 1.9's.

I mentioned this was for Shred the Ledge possibly the Lone Wolf class. For those of you who don't know, the Lone Wolf class means you have to run the entire course twice. Once with 1.9 and once with 2.2 on the same truck. biggest stipulation is you cannot receive any help from any other competitor. Sooo here she sits with 2.2's.

I will need to make a couple changes before its final. Ill need to adjust the wheel base slightly. Rear tires could be fine as they sit, but I'd like them just slightly further away from the sliders. The front tires clear everything but the tip of the sliders at 3/4ish turn. I could probably just run a slightly smaller tire and get away with it, but i wanna run the same tire in 1.9 and 2.2, just because... The tires btw are the Falken Wildpweaks from the g6 and yeti kit.

I"ll probably add some more info as time goes on and changes are made, but as i said other than a couple minor changes and detail work, shes ready to run.
