Discovery Channel: 'Deadliest Catch' captain dies
Feb. 10, 2010, 12:14 AM EST
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- A spokesman for The Discovery Channel says the captain of the "Deadliest Catch" fishing vessel Cornelia Marie has died.
Capt. Phil Harris suffered what his family described as a massive stroke on Jan. 29 while the boat was in port at St. Paul Island, Alaska. He was flown to Anchorage for surgery.
A Discovery spokesman says the Harris family contacted the network Tuesday evening with word of his death.

Few details were released; however, Discovery Channel spokeswoman Elizabeth Hillman issued a statement on behalf of Harris' sons, Jake and Josh, saying their father has "always been a fighter and continued to be until the end."
The Discovery Channel reality show depicts the crab fishing industry in the dangerous waters off Alaska. Harris' fishing vessel was based in Seattle.

yeah he was lucky to live this long from what the doctors were saying last year, its a shame for sure and i hope his family is doing alright

Sad to hear.

He was a pain in the ass customer though. I always got stuck working on his duraturd and my buddy always got stuck with his vetts...

He was the type of character that when he walked into the shop he looked like he just stepped out of the bed--or partied too hard the night before...

RIP cap'n phil. He was definately one of my favs. I really feel sorry for his two boys; i hope they can continue to run the boat. At least he went out like a real man ( which you rarely see these days) with his boots on doing what he loved.

Wonder if murry will come back and captain this boat? He really never took care of himself even after all his health problems. I would of just retired and enjoyed life with all his money.

I was bummed out to hear this on the radio this morning. I really like that show and will miss his character for sure.

Yeah, this sucks, but considering the man lived on cigarettes and Red Bull something bad was bound to happen. My wife is torn up about it, she has met him a couple of times when we lived up in WA State.

RIP
