Currently building my cr01 (first crawler) Wondering why many guys in picture threads are running shocks up next to the springs. Is this a performance upgrade or just beeter looking. Also where do you get the spacers and hardware for altering rigs like that? What shocks do you guys reccomend for a cr01. i was looking at the 94mm on junfac. Also was thinking of going brushless novak goat setup. Should I invest in the metal planetary gears and drive shafts i found on hot racing? any thought on pinion gears?

I can't comment on the shock issues yet as I am redoing mine to fit onto an axial chassis with the Tamiya axles and tranny but new Junfac links and some 3Racing aluminum parts.
I know many prefer to get rid of the cantilever system.

The links can be bought pretty much anywhere. Axial sells them or Junfac in various lengths. Others with access on here have also fabricated their own.
Me not so resouceful so will buy whatever I need/require.

As for the planetary gears, I have been running the stocks for a while now with no problems. I opened it up recently to relube and they still look in good shape. It will induce more noise as all metal parts will. I just have a spare gear set from Tamiya and it only costs $5 including the larger gear wheel.

You can't go wrong with either the Goat or Rooster from Novak. Just one will be brushless capable. I had a Rooster in mine and it was great. You will need the drag brake settings capability to crawl, but that depends upon how crawl worthy you would like to set it up. If it's for scale looks and just general beating around any combo will do.

You won't need the metal planetary gear set. The way its set up stock is pretty indestructible. I just took mine apart as well because I thought I had a gear issue and everything was perfect inside. Turns out I had a loose grub screw on the pinion and it was slipping.

If you were to do coilover type shocks the Junfac 94mm would be a good choice. I got the 104mm and they are too long to work that way but they work great as replacements in the stock set up. If you're keeping the stock suspension set up you can get Tamiya aluminum shocks for CR-01 if you want to keep it in the family.
