Evolution of A SuperBully SuperJuice

Jim, the rig is looking good, and Mike does have a spare set of axles for the XLD. He may also have a set of 38.1 heavy duty gears unless I gave those to you. Keep up the good work.

Now for a little background on the super that I traded to you for an XR-10. I originally started with a set of Bully XLD's and all the electronics I would need. Since I knew I would need to add weight to the front I figured I'd lighten up the rear and maybe I wouldn't need so much weight up front. Anyway to make a long story short I used the light weight gearbox #Z-S0069 and the Knuckles from the Bully 2.2 light weight axle tube and knuckle assembly part #Z-S0070. These two items lightened the rear axle up significantly and did allow less weight up front. And the original 38 .1 gear ratio was retained in both axles.

I loved the servo mounts Mike built for it and even though it only allows use of one servo, I guess you could always mount a 7980 and pump 8 or 9 volts to it. That should pump the torque up to 700-800oz in or so. Jeremy said that 9 volts was Ok for the 7950 so it should be Ok for the 7980. Well I rambled on enough for now. I'll keep up with your thread just to keep you straight.

Thanks for fact checking for me, and keeping the build story correct. As I said on the phone this afternoon, I was getting bombarded with questions about how the gearboxes came to be and I didn't know the answers.

I heard Jeremy (krawlfreak) last weekend saying that about upping the voltage and have been thinking about it, but maybe I'll hold that till after the Nationals Show....just to be safe.

Also, I told TheOther in Germany that I'd ask you if he can get a Super for an XR10 trade deal too.....

Ahh.....sorry....I wasnt trying to bombard you with questions.....just stating that I have had better luck with one set over another....

...yea...between you and MTHeaded John, I thought I was about to be waterboarded.....:flipoff:

No appologoies needed, I have a habbit of picking words that might overstate a matter...it's sort of a hobby of mine...:ror:

No sweat on the fact checking, the phone connections sucked. And the only thing I can tell "The Other" is, Sorry: Relatives only.

Ok. I had a few minutes to work on the rig and got the electronics laid into the floor and plugged in today.

Amazingly enough, those two monsterous ESC's and that gigantic BEC, all fit on the floor and the Beetlejuice hood/deck panel will fit nicely over the top of them.

Next up will be to tidy up the excess wiring and then go to work on the wheels and tires.

Hi Jim,
your german is ok, it's like my english. I understand it "thumbsup"

off topic
Which motorbike is on the pictures?

@bikedad: Damn:cry: It would been a good deal :lmao:

Greetings - Sascha

Still off topic, the one on the lift is the old workhorse Suzuki DRZ400E. Great trail bike.

But if you like you motorbikes, you have to like this one....:mrgreen:

Ok, back to topic."thumbsup"

Ok. Enough about motorbikes. Back to the build.

The mailman dropped off for me on Saturday some of these gems. Great service from Steven (Sven), these things were here from PayPal at his house in TN (?), all the way to Phoenix in three days.

Not a great pic, but once again, I forgot to take pics while I was installing them, so for now, we get a cropped slice of another pic that shows them installed before moving on to other things. There'll be better pics later, after the other things.

I'd ordered up some Maximizer 3.2 wheels with the zero offset. They are one of the few 3.2 beadlocks that I could find and were cheap enough that I could experiment with narrowing them.

I packed up and headed over to azvader's house, the infamous Brother In Law, son of the Father In Law from the first post. The garage where many great crawler innovations have come from over the years and where many old rigs have gone to die. He's got one of those tiny little $300 bench-top lathes that are perfect for crawler parts.

The rims are 2" wide and since I'm planning Sedonas for these rims, I was shooting for 1.5" finished width.

The inner rim section has protruding material for the lock ring's bolts, but only at one end, so the 1/2" we removed had to begin inboard of that.

boltholematerial.jpg

Also, because we wanted to use the cut away section of rim as a gusset to strengthen the rim when reassembling, the 1/2 we were removing had to leave equal distance on each side of the new rim's seam. We came up with 3/4" from the lock ring side for the first cut.

MeasureFirstCut.jpg

We used a hacksaw as a cut-off blade to slice off the outer section of our new rim.

FirstCut.jpg

We started getting a sort of assembly line going of cutting, deburring, and gluing, that we forgot to get more pictures. Suffice to say, the next cut is 1/2" to the left of the first cut.

When we glued them up, we used the excess as a gusset, but the raised spots for the bold holes was going to interfere, so we marked and notched the gusseting ring and slipped it right into position.

Here you can see one assembled and how the gusset wraps around the bold holes, and a couple ready for installation.

Next up was cutting the outer bead rings. Of course, since we were removing 1/2" from the rim, we then needed to remove 1/4" from each of these so they would remain in synch with the inner rim segments....of course.

Here is Mike using some sort of a steak knife or super fine-toothed saw for delicate amputations or something, that we found to get a much finer cut on the outer rings.

A few more pics we forgot to take as we wrapped up the wheel narrowing. They came out perfect except that if you're into keeping things super tidy and ultra clean in your builds, and you're gluing white, plastic, don't use black cotton to wipe away excess CA glue. And here is the finished product.

FinishedWheel.jpg

We then got busy cutting and gluing up a set of Sedonas to fit the new rims, and did not take any pics of that either. Who cares though, eh, there are 40 threads on that over in Tires and Wheels. We mounted up two tires on the wheels and sorted out the width of the hexes.

Because of the knuckle weights, I had to go with a wider hex than I was using. The hexes that came on the truck were almost flush up on the pins, narrower than stock, so with these weights, Mike and I figured out how to machine the big old 20mm ThunderTech wideners to work on the Bully axles and made sets for both my rig and his.

Of course we didn't get pics, so I'll have to add some of those later if anyone is interested.

Tonight I mounted up the other two tires and got everything installed, I'll post pics tomorrow.

Jim,
I didn't think about this last night, but do you think if you used the Maximizers with the 1/2 inch offset you could get by without the wheel wideners? Just a thought and it might be something to think about in the future. Oh, by the way, the super is looking "SUPER"!!!!

Nice work on those wheels!

Thanks. It was a lot of work though. Some conventional beadlocks would be preferable. Mounting the tires is a job and a half too.....

I don't know....I'd thought about that a few times. They likely would allow a less extreme widener, but I don't know if there is a geometric advantage to steering or something like that. While I like the bit more width for the car's stability, I'd like a bit narrower hex at the same time.

Here are some finished pics. The truck is just about ready for some testing. I'm waiting on some skins from KrawlerKonceptz. All that's left to do is get the skins applied and install the body panels.

Whoops, autofocus was off....

And someone was asking about the servo mount....???

It's hard to get pics of, partly because of where it is, and partly because I can't sort out how to get good tight macro shots with the SLR...

I'm quite pleased with how it's shaped up. I will be doing some testing this weekend. It's gonna run great and I'm excited once again about the beginning of a season of Supers. "thumbsup""thumbsup"

I hope to see you at nationals with that attitude....I might actually be able to beat one person! :ror:

You will see me at Nationals, and I will have that attitude....you'll just have to decide for yourself whether you think I'm taking myself seriously or not....

Got my skins yesterday from KrawlerKonceptz. Great service again, Michelle!!

Installed the panels today and she's now ready for Nationals!

All that's left now is the driving. And after my test and shake-down run this past Sunday, I'm excited! Comp lines that stifled the old Clods, were effortless for this car.
