As a prank, students from local high schools have been taking advantage of the county's Speed Camera Program in order to exact revenge on people who they believe have wronged them in the past, including other students and even teachers.

...students duplicate the license plates by printing plate numbers on glossy photo paper, using fonts from certain websites that "mimic" those on Maryland license plates. They tape the duplicate plate over the existing plate on the back of their car and purposefully speed through a speed camera, the parent said. The victim then receives a citation in the mail days later.

And they say kids are getting dumber these days. :ror:

Although it is immoral, illegal and generally wrong it's still very funny.

I actually posted the story because of this comment in the story:

"I hope the public at large will complain loudly enough that local Montgomery County government officials will change their policy of using these cameras for monetary gain," the parent said. "The practice of sending speeding tickets to faceless recipients without any type of verification is unwarranted and an exploitation of our rights."

Now being from Great Britain Tupers, I realize you are from the land where camera surveillance is normal and police don't have guns. I don't agree with camera enforcement and these kids are just one of the many reasons why. I do not want a "Big Brother" government watching over me.

I am traffic engineer and I support automated enforcement. In these instances it is a very simple process to refute the ticket, and it doesn't require any type of court appearance. You would just have the local jurisdiction cross reference the make and model of the car with the license plate.

The only issue would be if the kids used the same make model and color of the car

Automated enforcement tickets are like parking tickets though, they do not go against your license or insurance.

I never knew that. What is the reason behind them being just "money" penalties as oppossed to a full on ticket? Is it because of proof of driving is impossible to find guilty?

Basically they are fining the owner of the vehicle not the driver then...I'd never loan my car to anyone under those circumstances.

12 years ago when I was among those 18yr old crowds yeah i would probably done the same thing and thought the cameras were wrong.

12 years later, grown up and a family, yeah i think those automated cameras should stay in place. if it was really big brother watching you then it would be a live web cam ......

like Harley said, just run the plates and match the picture, not hard to disprove a picture.

That is correct. Another thing, most models of the speed cameras are only good to a little under 100mph. :) So if your gonna speed, go big. Now the ones that they setup temporarily (usually much higher end models) are accurate to much higher speeds. Also, many of the new cameras are a little better quality.

We have used the older ones in KC for test beds, no tickets were issued, the owners were just sent pictures with a warning. Oh and it was almost always impossible to get the plates on motorcycles.

I spent about 7 years in Germany and they use cameras there. The pics are so good you can actually see facial expressions on the driver. Not too hard to dispute if it wasn't you.

Yeah I have seen the German stuff, they don't cut any corners. Those guys are crazy about their traffic control! US governments usually aren't quite frivolous. Especially when they are starting from scratch. $10,000 cameras plus the controller and interconnect systems usually are $50k+. So they will go cheap and put in 5 cheaper setups rather than 1 or 2 good setups. It hurts the data and ends up not giving a very good look at what they can really do.

They do in IL, Automatic Speeding Tickets and redlight cameras count just the same as if an officer pulls you over. Only thing is that it goes against the car owner, doesnt have to be the driver since around here they dont take a pic of the driver, just the plates. Also, good luck getting out of it, Chicago has a 95% conviction record. They dont even say anymore that they are doing it to help prevent accidents, they come right out and say its to increase revenue.

Must be a state law that was passed.

The worst... Automated speed camera in a work zone gets you $375 fine, second one gets $1000 fine and 6 month suspension...100% conviction record. They say its for worker saftey... Il, the bend you over state.

Holy sh#t. It's like a rigged lottery for the state.

This one hits close to home for me, as I drive through two of these F-ing speed cameras on my way to work, here in Montgomery county, and they are worthless.

Everybody, including myself, does 50 until your 100 yards away from the damn thing, slow down to 35, then right back up to 50 after you pass it. Ive seen people not paying attention almost rear-end the person in front of them because of this. If you ask me, I think they are dangerous because of that fact. Stupid F#*king MoCo...

I agree that I don't think the speed cameras are as effective. I support red light running cameras 100% though.
