First Lipo

Hello,

I am currently using a 3000mah NiMh 7.2v battery with a Hobbywing 1060 esc but would like to convert to lipo with a deans connector and CC BEC.

I will be looking at purchasing a 2S lipo but have questions on the following:

1. I found some threads online that said I could potentially burn the motor out. I am using an HPI 55T motor.

2. I've noticed a lot of people are using batteries with a lower mah rating. is 3000mah too high? Do I need lower with a lipo? I thought capacity rating was how long the battery lasted each run time roughly?

3. Would it be worth changing to a lipo? Will I feel the benefits when crawling?

I am running this setup on an SCX10 by the way.
 
Mah is just the battery life, the higher you go, the longer the life of it. It will definitely be beneficial providing more torque and speed.

That's just my setup nothing special, but I do get 4 hours of battery life!

I think my gearing is the same, it would be the standard setup with the kit. I've not changed the pinion or spur.

Is that a lipo or nimh you are using?

So the burning of the motor question, can this happen?
 
There will be a big advantage to switching to lipos over NIMH packs. The lipo is much lighter for the same capacity and they maintain higher voltage for longer both mean better performance.

The larger MAH means more runtime but there comes a point where it is too much. I have a 4000mah 3s pack that I use in my SCX10 and I couldn't tell you how long the runtime actually is because I have never come close to running it down that much. I usually have to pack it in after 3-3.5 hours and the battery still has plenty of life left.

With that 55T motor, you could go with a 2200mah pack and still get 1.5+ hours of runtime while reducing the battery weight (a 2200mah 2S pack weights about 1/3 of a 6 cell NIMH pack).

I guess a 30C rating is high enough?

Yes, but higher C rating packs generally last longer and take more charge/discharge abuse. SMC Batteries and Turnigy batteries at Hobbyking have been good ime.

I am using lipo. I haven't burned a motor (I have trying to use it as a submarine) but that's the only thing. To my knowledge I have never seen or heard anybody burning up a motor from a lipo.

I recently got back into the RC hobby and with the help of others on here, I also went from nimh to lipo...the difference is night and day!

I went from a new 5000mah nimh 7.2v batt to a 2200mah 45-90C 3s Lipo. On a 55T motor, I get tired of running the truck before the battery dies. Not to mention WAY more power than before because you're going from 7.2v (nimh) to 11.1v (3s lipo).

Eeepee gave me good advice, get the highest C rating you can afford :).

I'm also running a Castle BEC at 7.4v for my steering servo and a LED kit.
 
I like the hobbyking zippy brand batteries, typically use about 3000-3300 mah, 40c and can be bought for about $15-$20. It will definitely be worth the switch. If you burn up a 55t motor, it will likely be from binding or another issue, not the battery. I prefer to use the lighter 2000-3000 mah batteries for less weight. A couple of these will likely get you a few hours of runtime for around $30.
