G10 material

So, I keep seeing stuff in G10 that looks awesome.
From what I know it is similar to carbon fiber in its properties but it can come in different colors and I hope it will be a bit cheaper than CF.
And that brings me to my question, where can I find the damn thing?!

I'm located in Portugal but if the price is right I don't mind buying from another place outside of Europe...

It is pretty similar to CF and a heck of a lot cheaper. I can't vouch for the colors since I have only used black in parts but its pretty good stuff. Just note that it is a little heavier than CF since it is so much more dense and it makes a LOT of dust. So take the proper precautions when cutting it... your lungs are worth saving "thumbsup"

I buy mine from McMasterCarr but they don't ship international to the best of my knowledge. If you need to someone on RCC could buy some and send it your way. Also check knife supply places even though they tend to only sell it in tiny pieces

It's used to make knife scales (the handles). I used to go on the British blades forum a while ago. Having a look on there I found some links, but dont know whether the suppliers will send to Portugal. It might be worth asking I guess.

G10 is much cheaper than CF, is slightly heavier, has similar impact resistance.

Stiffness wise, pre thickness, CF is much stiffer, but if designed properly, stiffness won't be an issue.

Ehhh, I wouldn't exactly go that far. That phenolic that you linked is linen based. The G10/FR4 that I use for my products is fiber glass based. Two different beasts.

As stated garolite is much cheaper than carbon fiber but it's construction is similar, just the fiber material is different. G10 if MUCH nicer to machine than carbon fiber.

I have some graphite impregnated garolite sitting on my desk waiting to be made into some gibbs for my mini-mill. Stuff is definitely interesting and you can tell the fibers are NOT made of glass just by the feel of the edge.

I totally agree with you on that. CF just devours tools while G10 is still nasty its not AS aggressive and is less likely to de-laminate on you... still got to watch the dust!

I'm looking for some larger strips than 2 inches wide. I'd like at least 3 inches wide. Trying to get some so I can make a chassis for my MRC.:mrgreen:

AKS has a lot of variety but I didn't find it very straight forward to deal with, especially being from Portugal.

First I had to convince them that I was legit (and I'm ok with that).
After that the minimum that I had to spend was 50$ and because I was paying electronically they would charge extra 15$!
That would make it too expensive....
I will try to buy some place else but it's hard to find so much variety as in AKS.
