Does anyone "make" or know of a place that sells gear reduction units. I need a 1.5:1 reducer but I can't find any for the 540 motor. Alot of what I see are for airplanes and use the 380 motor.
thanks

i think that most people are makin then but what ive been workin on is using the plae one and matching some gears with metal and then custum making a motor plate that would srew on where the 80 would so it would sit right there

Lot of us are using the GD-600 reduction unit. Bolts up to a 540/550 motor. Uses 48-pitch gears so gearing options are easy to pick. Mine is running a 20 tooth pinion, making the reduction only 2.25:1. It seems like the largest pinion you could fit in there would be a 25 tooth, making the reduction about 1.8:1.

Go to Towers site and search for GD-600, Gear drive, etc.

The only problem with the GD-600 is the output shaft, it's much larger than a standard motor shaft size.... some have had a machine shop machine it down, some have taken a grinder to it and some have drilled out pinions to fit over it. It's a strong unit and has been through quite a bit with me. I recomend it.

and what would be biggest ratio possible?? i know that in txt its about 140:1 ( someone posted its with mammoth gearbox) maybe 200:1 is possible??

Biggest? Do you mean lowest ratio?

I had my Juggy down to 478.8:1 for a final crawl ratio when I first installed the GD-600.... way to freakin' slow. 315:1 worked really well at one of the local crawling areas and 225:1 wasn't right.... My X-Factor/Jugg hybrid was at 425:1 and it was nice and slow.

Has anyone tried the Thundertech racing 7:1 gear reduction box? They said its made for a Clodbuster.

What pitch is a Clod?

The GD600 could probably be made to fit up to a stampede tranny, but it'd need spacers or modicfications to the tranny to line it up right. The TTR gear reduction is cool, but so expensive! Why pay that much when the GD600 is $12.99 and works nicely? (After a bored out pinion or ground shaft) You couldnt possible need more reduction than you can get with the GD... :)

Also, Willy at "Willyscustom RC" used to sell bored out pinions...

Im designing a crawler using Savage drivetrain. I havent figured out the crawl ratio to determine what I need. Plus I have a two speed tranny. I dont know if it will shift though.

Well I figured it out that I can get a 215.16:1 ratio in a TXT with a 9t pinion and a GD600 crawl box with a 12t pinion(3.8:1) The 9t gets you 56.62:1 then you add the crawl box and bam 215:1

GD-600 gear reduction unit

Ok So I'm taking my GD 600 apart to bring the main shaft to work to turn on the lathe and I brake the main(spur) gear. I've got the shaft in a vise and I'm trying to tap the gear off and SNAP! the thing breaks in 4 pieces. I guess that's why most people drill out the pinion.

Can you drill out a 9t pinion? Is there enough material for that large of a shaft?

Ok now even one can laugh at how many times I said "shaft."

No, not most... few of couple of the ORCRC comp guys, including myself have machined down the output on the reduction unit. One of the guys has a buddy that does CNC work so he had him do it...... ME, on the other hand did it in about 5 minutes on the vise.

Here's what you do(sorry no pics as I didn't even think about taking pictures)....
- Have a motor bolted into reduction unit
- Mount reducton unit into a vise and not allowed to wiggle around
- Connect motor to a battery, I just used a half chaged 6-cell pack
- Take a metal file and hold up against output shaft as it's spinning & grind/file it down untill it reaches the correct diameter of a standard motor shaft. Stop every 20-25 seconds just to check as it goes fast.

The output shaft on the GD-600 is rather soft once you get through the first thin layer. This whole process only takes about 5 minutes or so to do. I did it in the garage the night before our little crawling session last weekend and it works great. Probably some of my very best booty fab work to date

toyofast you da man , I have bored out 3 or 4 pinons and haven't got 1 right yet!. that is a good idea and I will try it, .
also someone asked about a pede tranny working with the gd600 , I have made one fit a tc3 and a b3 , so I believe it will work , with a little booty fabbing!

Ok, So after breaking the gear I go to Tower online and order a new unit. Before I hit the order button I see the replacement shaft and gearfor $2.79. Sweet. Apparently I'm not the first person to break this thing.

Since I've got a spare shaft on the way I may try and turn it down on a lathe here at work. if it doesn't work I'll be a botty fab'in fool.

wow, these look pretty interesting! i may order 4 of these.

i have a E-maxx crawler that i am doing some research on, compiling a parts list and what not, should come in handy!

and i have a hybrid E-maxx. i ditched the E-maxx tranny and put a 1/8th scale center diff in there. that left me WAY over geared. luckily the 2.5 gear ratio of this should be close enough to match the E-maxx's tranny.

by the way, you guys got a great site going here. lots of info!

hey, dose the GD-600 work good on a clod, and how much work is it to set up??

Not sure how much room you have to spare as the GD-600 is kinda bulky..sorta.

Main thing is to machine down the output shaft off the unit, then finding a way to bolt it up.

Worst case is that you just blow the $12 and see if you can get one to fit... then if you can, buy another as you'd need 2 for a Clod.
