When my dad past away last October he left behind a great project that he did not get finished. My mom got him this 1980 Jeep CJ7 sitting in the garage unfinished. I was supposed to go up to Colorado last Thanksgiving and work on it with him as father and son like we used to do when I was a kid but plans changed when he took his life. My mom did not go into the garage at all during the time of mourning but she told me to go in there if I needed too. I have never seen the Jeep in person until that day. There was his Jeep sitting there just waiting to get worked on. The body is rough but I look past all that. I got it to start up but it was running rough but the motor sounded solid, I am guessing that there was old fuel in the tank. After sitting in the garage for a while and do some body work, it felt like my dad was sitting right next to me teaching me what to do like when I was a kid and he was smiling down at me with joy and I felt it. We finally got all my mom's stuff loaded up in the Uhaul and got the Jeep on the trailer to bring back home to Texas. She was wanting to get it fixed in a hurry so she took it to a body shop but they told her it was going to be about $10,000+ to fix it right and she just took it back home and put it in the back yard. It has been 10 months we lost my dad and my mom has been here in Texas, she is now going back up to South Dakota(thought she was going to Colorado at first) to be with her friend that is going to help her get back on her feet. She was always happier up there and I support her decision. My mom told me that as soon as she gets the loan for the Jeep paid off that she will sign the title over to me so the Jeep will be mine.

Sorry for the long story but it is what makes this Jeep awesome to me. It will never be sold and it will be kept in the family since it was my dads. My first plan is to get the motor running good and then start the body work. I am thinking of painting it a flat desert tan with black diamond plate panels and black tube bumpers and rollcage, it has the original hardtop which is awesome. I have a set of 33" mud tires I will throw on there for now. I am going to use YJ leaf springs and do an axle flip to get a better ride and lift. The jeep will not see any hardcore trail riding for a while but it will see some trails. Well here are the pics that I took with my phone of how it sits rights now.

Good question, now they only give loans on 2007 and newer vehicles. 2008 next year, 2009 and so on.

I would never sell it either, keep it in the family."thumbsup"

definitely keep it in the family... i still have my high school truck (well what parts are left of it) from 1991... and my oldest will get it.. well both kids will enjoy it..
something about... owned.. you dont have to sell it cuz you have the title and it is paid for...
definitely get it running good.. and do the bodywork slow.. $10k+ WTF... if overhauled can do stuff like that in a week... I dont see why a shop would charge so much... guess i dont see it...

This is not true, here in AL they go as far back as 1996. I know for fact because I just bought a 98 jeep wrangler and financed because the interest rate was really good. Credit unions may not go that far back, but my personal bank does.

Great project and there's TONS of potential in that CJ, man. I'm sure your dad is looking down and is very pleased you're taking on this project.

I lost my dad many years ago and he wasn't even a "car guy", really. But every time I work in the garage I can feel he's looking down with a smile on his face while he watches me fabricate. He's still with me.

Wishing you, your mom, and the rest of your family all the best. May your dad rest in peace.

Great story and a cool car.

The U.S. car finance laws suck ass. My missus got finance for a very rough 1964 car only a couple of years ago."thumbsup"

I dont know how they got financed for it but they did. I know my dad is smiling down and somewhere on the body maybe airbrush a small mural on the glovebox door. When i get the bodies painted for these last few guys and am going to stop painting and concentrate on the jeep for a while. I was up late lastnight online making a wishlist, lol.

Nice project. The good thing is there is no end to parts for Jeeps. Most every part on it is easily available by many manufacturers. You can build one completely by just browsing a catalog. Good luck with the Jeep "thumbsup"

Took a break from painting this weekend and worked on the Jeep some. Replaced the starter, battery and changed the oil. Got it running pretty good and did some tuning to the timing and carb and got it running better. Decided to take it to the back of our property and drive it around some to have a little fun. I was so happy and felt free while I was driving it around. Felt my dad laughing at me because all the fun I was having driving it around. It was the most fun I had in a long time. Here are a couple of flex shots in our driveway.

Another thing I found out is that everything works even the windshield washer sprayer, lol. My nephew has a truck that he wrecked and I am thinking about stealing the axles out from it but the front axle is busted so i need to find a front axle. The axles will come off a 2000 Dodge 1500 4x4 so they will stick out about 6" on each side.
