I just found out about these guys this morning, I don’t say this lightly but if there’s ever going to be a second coming of Led Zeppelin this might be it.

Greta Van Fleet is four young musicians - twin brothers Josh (vocals) and Jake (guitar), both 22, younger brother Sam (bass/keys, 19), and longtime family friend Danny Wagner (drums, 19).

That's the rub. They sound just like Led Zeppelin.

As I get older, bands like these do nothing for me because they sound derivative.

All music is derivative.

I had the same thoughts though, but after listening to more the less I cared. These guys, especially for as young as they are, seem to have something special. If they spend the rest of their career (or had made a career) being a Led Zeppelin clone I’ll be disappointed, but for a very young band with a couple of kids that can’t buy a beer yet I’m blown away, and am excited to see what else comes from these guys.

Yeah, but when I heard "Highway Tune", it sounded like something that could have came off of "Physical Graffiti". There is being derivative and then there is being a Xerox machine. I find it even more ironic, as, back in the '80s, the band Kingdom Come got roasted for sounding "too much like Zeppelin". They sounded less like Zep than these guys do.

I'd like to see if they find themselves when they do the next album.

...the band Kingdom Come...

aka Kingdom Clone. "thumbsup"

Speaking as a musician... When I received an email a while back from my buddy in Florida ( drummer) about these guys, I knew that I had to take a listen. We both grew up on Zeppelin, Floyd, Maiden, etc... and between us both, I think that we had just about every Zeppelin EP, rare recording, book, poster, print, etc ever made. Anyway... As I first listened to GVF, it was with a good deal of skepticism and prejudice yet I was almost immediately impressed. A few songs later and I continued to feel like they had talent, were making music that they liked, and were creating a marketable sound that a lot of other bands have failed to do when paying homage to their idols.

I'd also like to say that it seems that when I was younger, I was more easily turned off by bands like this, for the same reasons that I hear a lot of people talking bad about GVF... That they are copy-cats, that they aren't the same as the real deal, that they're just capitalizing on the popularity of Led Zeppelin. But the older that I get, the more that I feel like it's not always so cut and dry. These kids are obviously creating music that they are passionate about. They're not trying to copy the image of Zeppelin by trying to APPEAR like Zeppelin, and most importantly... the songs that they're writing are obviously not simply duplicated nor regurgitated. They've developed a sound that although very obviously embodies Zeppelin, still possesses a great deal of respectable originality.

It seems as if bands these days just can't win. If they are too different from a band that they are possibly trying to emulate, then "They just suck... They don't even sound like the original". Yet if they are nailing a certain sound or persona, then they are judged as "Imitators... The original was better". But here's a thought...

Led Zeppelin is long gone and we'll never hear Bonzo and JPJ, and Plant, and Page together ever again. The wonderful music that they created is just a memory... no matter how many times we play those albums over and over... there is no more. But as open-minded fans who might appreciate this fact, now we have some young guys that are allowing us to experience a little different flavor of one best rock-n-roll bands of all time. I'm embracing it, enjoying these new songs, and finding contentment in hearing some very well done tunes that truly take me back to what it felt like to be a teen before the world completely went to hell. Thank you, Greta Van Fleet... for the tribute, for the respect, for the originality, for the similarities, and for all the passion and hard work that you put into it. As a life-long Zeppelin fan, you guys have my genuine admiration.

That might have been their problem. I didn’t enjoy that nearly as much as hearing these guys.

HPD makes many good points "thumbsup"

I'm not knocking their sound. They've got talent and it's obvious that Zep was a heavy influence. If they can do their own thing with it, they'll do good.

At least they aren't another bubble gum boy band.

I am not knocking their talent either. I'm just at a point where there isn't anything new that is making me jump up and say "I gotta run out and buy that album!!!" Rock has just become too stagnant, in my opinion.

I don’t know, usually when I hear people say that they have given up looking and don’t own much music released in the last decade. You gotta look pretty hard but it’s probably out there.

Some of my favorite rock artists that are releasing music currently...

The Sheepdogs
Pack AD
Patrick Sweany
Gary Clark Jr
My Morning Jacket / Jim James
Radio Moscow
Any of Ty Segall’s projects but “Fuzz” is my favorite
Dan Auerbach’s solo stuff is worth listening to and also as the Arcs
Maybe check out Chulohoma if you want that new old stuff (Dan and Patrick do Junior Kimbrough)

I digress. One more to share, this radio show they did I think shows their range and ability to stay original while paying homage to their influences. There’s a brief interview in the middle where they touch on some of what we’ve discussed here.

I feel the exact same way... with me unfortunately, I think that my age plays into it and just like anyone in their 40's-50's+, I had what I feel were the absolute best bands to listen to in my teens and twenties. Music that's new to me... even really good music, simply doesn't move me like it used to. In most instances... even if a song or two is REALLY good, I often don't even check out the rest of the band's offerings. That never would've been the case back in the day.

I felt the Zeppelin vibe before he finished the first two words in Highway Tune and it gave me goose bumps. I'm young enough that I would never have been able to see any of the greats live but that's what I grew up listening to. I almost never get the same feeling I just got listening to new music so this is awesome for me. To know these kids are so young I can see potential as they grow up and they have plenty of time to develop a sound that's their own and not too similar to older stuff.

I'm going to be working on my truck for a bit today and I'm going to throw these guys on and listen and maybe add a new set of rock to my playlist.

I'm part of the group that hasn't found a lot of new music I liked in the last decade and a half or more BUT I still love what was new in the late 90s when I was a teenager, I still listen to Limp Bizkit and Korn so judge how you want but this is exciting for me.

These guys are legit. I live about 20 minutes away from their home town and it's pretty cool to see a local band blow up so big, so fast.

Some fishing-laker has been going on and on about these guys for the last 3 weeks on our local radio station, so 2 weeks ago I downloaded it from iTunes. I like them, to be honest highway tune, and safari song aren’t even my favourite, I kinda enjoyed edge of darkness.

I anyone is curious at to what a fishing-laker is, it’s a person from a neighbouring community, both our communities are on opposite sides of the Frog Lake.

Hell yes there guys are awesome.
My local station plays them all the time.

*ok now that obread these posts I would like to offer my take on the whole copycat thing.

I compare this to movies.
These guys are not a remake. They are a SEQUEL (with a new cast). and a damn good one.

Honestly, that's the perfect way to describe these kids"thumbsup"

yep. good sound. heard em early this year. almost went to the 2 concerts in December. these kids sell out a show quick! hopefully they stay on the right path and not end up like black tide...

This is another band with a classic sound that can take you back a quite a few decades. They’ve since had a change at lead guitarist but still put out some good stuff.

And if you like junior kimbrough and haven’t heard Dan Auerbach covering him then you may enjoy this one
