Dont know if its true or not, dont have any links, I just heard word of mouth that certain localities in random areas are actually trying this in an effort to reduce violence/set an example in certain communities. Anyone else heard of this?

Regardless of whether or not its true Im curious to hear opnions on the idea. From the perspective of a civilian Im tempted to say go ahead lets see what happens (assuming there are LEOs volunteering, which is what I heard), but from a LEOs perspective it seems quite rediculous. If I was an LEO theres no way Id go out without a sidearm.

It's pretty much the dumbest idea in the history of dumb ideas. No LE agency would EVER go for that unless it was a bunch of brainwashed liberals who don't live in reality. I say go for it though. Doesn't effect me, I carry and that's all that matters since LE doesn't actually protect the public. They just draw chalk around your body after you're already dead.

When I worked as an armed park ranger, we had a few unarmed rangers. Most of the time the were just checking park passes and boat registration. Any chance of conflict with a contact and they backed off until one of us could show up. Don't see how a municipality in the U.S. can truly make this work. But hey, if word gets out enough on these areas, maybe some of the crime will move out of the bigger cities since they won't have to worry about being shot. Hopefully Boulder,CO is on this list.

Ever heard of Bobbies? Only the majority of British police DON'T carry weapons. Only special units carry. Not approving the idea but their crime rate per capita is very similar to ours so it can't be that stupid.

Apples to oranges. First off the Brits are nuts all around. Secondly, guns as a whole have been hard to get over there for a long time so there aren't as many of them to begin with.

In the U.S. there are more guns than people. NEVER going to get rid of them all. Criminals will ALWAYS have easy access to them. In many areas unarmed cops wouldn't be a big deal because there is very little if any violent crime but in some places, especially urban areas with gangs and such, the police would be targeted(they sometimes are anyway!) and massacred.

You are dangerously close to suggesting that it's the number of guns that's the problem... Be careful what you say, the RCC gun lobby might come looking for you.

So by your logic the average citizen in the U.K. is very similar to the average citizen in the U.S.A..

I completely disagree with that premise.
Americans are known worldwide to be some of the most aggressive & violent people on the planet.

When I backpacked across Europe in 98' i dressed to blend. This worked well most of the time & people were very chill 99% of the time (assuming I was European) When I spoke & identified myself as an American most (yes MOST) Europeans took a step back & shrunk a little, intimidated by the shear fact they were within arms reach of an American.

Sorry but the people of America are far more difficult to convince to follow the instructions of a LEO than the Brits.

You think Americans are more aggressive that other cultures? Have you never seen a soccer riot? I'm not sure what the news link is supposed to prove either? There are criminal acts that happen all the time in this country while innocent bystanders just stand by and watch

The last is a link is a demonstration but it proves my point. And that is after 10 seconds of searching. I am a former Marine and have been to five countries in Europe and seven in Asia. Including the 2 and half years I lived in Okinawa Japan and never saw anyone be afraid because I was an American. Now many cultures don't like us and may move away for that reason but no-one was ever afraid jut because I was an American. You were back packing and may have smelled profusely and you mistook it for fear? I don't know, but you and I seem to have had very different experiences

We're getting a little off topic here. Not that I agree with it, but from what I understand the gunless programs are supposed to target the most aggressive problem areas, not places where people wouldnt know the difference. Trying to get gangs and other violent people/groups/areas to understand that we're not trying to combat violence with more violence.

Not saying that I agree 100% with the idea, but thats the general basis for it.

There are violent people all across the world, theres no argument/discussion there....

Not at all what I said. I'm a healthy contributor to the # of guns in this country.. ;-)

The problem is the policy makers think guns are the problem because there are so many of them.

The problem is society is nearly at the point where it protects criminals and punishes law abiding citizens. The Criminal justice system is severely broken. Violent criminals need to be dealt with swiftly and without mercy.

Any thought process that leads someone to believe good guys not carrying guns will make criminals feel all warm and fuzzy and make them put the guns away and stop being violent is completely insane and so far from ANY form of reality its not even funny.

Well, in that case this idea will fail miserably. You can't stop gang members with your words or a baton. Unfortunately that's the way it is. The only way to deals with dirtbags like that is to take them off this planet.
