Hard shell body

Bring a tape measure and head to places like Toys R Us, K-mart, Radio Shack, Walmart, etc... There are lots lof toy manufacturers with vehicle licenses that make some really detailed bodies. They aren't necessarily RC cars/trucks, so sometimes you can score one for less than $30. I've seen pretty much every manufacturer.

Check out garage sales, and watch what folks put out in their garbage on pickup days. I've found a lot of hard bodies in different scales driving around town on garbage days. Especially in the spring when folks start having garage sales, getting rid of old toys, they put the toys out in front to draw buyers in, so it's easy to do a drive-by without stopping, unless you see something you like. You can usually pick up a decent old New Bright or Nikko r/c for next to nothing.
