HD Worm Drive Gears

I wouldnt quite go that far.

There are a fair amount of times I cannot make a climb in my MOA without over driving the rear.

I've heard of drivetrain bind being an issue with that setup as well. Anyone have any of that?

That's only because you can Erik...lol. Don't rub it in buddy! :) Oh, and because you have dig too...lol!

Chris

the 3 hour teardowns may be obsessive, but you need to get the abrasive junk grease out of the diff area very often. i skipped this one time just to test wear over time with no teardowns. ran for 30 hours and just grease through the port after each pack. the entire axle housing was filled with junk grease. the worm bearings were all shot from forcing it through, spool bearings held though. wear was significantly more than any previous wear i had, when i say that i mean that that 30 hours did more damage than the 90 of so hours i had on the truck previously doing consistent teardowns and greasings.

so which do would you ultimately recommend and over driven rear axle wit stock worm and spool and a high wheel speed hd worm in the front. or just 2 hd worms?

The one factor I'm most interested in is friction/drag in the drive train, and that hasn't been mentioned here.
Which worm drive has the least friction (given proper maintenance); HD or the standard drive?

Also, with front overdrive there will definitely be more drag when driving straight on a flat surface...

good question, the hd gears have more contact area, therefore they do produce a little more drag. minimal in comparison to the overdrive effect. that one is a fairly easy one to test too, just take an axle with each set in them, preferably with similar runtimes, and while holding the tire, the hd's be a little harder to turn. the overall effects on the transmission due to overdrive is one i'm still looking at, there doesn't SEEM to be increased wear, but with only about 50-60 hours of runtime on it, long term things could happen.

I just put one in the front of my LNC, made a big difference to the turning circle and climbing. Very good mob i think.

Thanks
Chris.

that would be the chromo worms if you're looking at the dlux site, if i remember right, he stopped making them. horizon is where i got my hd's.

Alexus,

Thx. Is this what is considered the overdrive version for the front (sportsman class & no dig)?

So is the gearing on the hd gears different from stock losi parts I pikes up a hd worm gear set when I put a dig tranny on my LNC but have not changed it over yet was waiting on the stock parts to crap out b4 trashing them

Yes they're different gearing. HD is 1:21 while stock is 1:25.
Having the front axle go a little faster than the rear is good, because it helps turning and climbing.
Different tyres rear/front do have effects. Good or bad depends on the combination used and other factors.

In my MOA rear overdrive is the better way for climbing! In my shafty I´ve tried one time rear overdrive and it works very well. Try it out if it works well for you too
