Hitec HS-985MG and other steering servo questions

Gentlemen, I have a HS-645 as my steering servos but it is not doing the job. (BTW, I have it on a Emaxx running with spools and 40 series Moabs/Beadlocks.)

1) Is this normal for this servo not to cut the mustard for this type of setup.

2) Do you guys still run a servo saver ? (Took mine off. Improved the performance a little bit, but not much.).

3) Thinking about getting the new Hitec HS-985MG. Anybody have/use this servo ? Would this work for my Emaxx, wannabee crawler ?

Thanks, Marcusg

What ESC are you using? If you're using an EVX/XL-1 in a MAXX, you'll want to use a reciever pack.. Those ESC's have low BEC ratings... An RX pack and removing the red wire out of the ESC RX plug made my 645MG come to life on my EVX...

Thanks DaviolentOne. Yeah, I'm using the EVX with the 1 battery pack modification.

What do you mean or could you explain to me how to do that mod your talking about with the red wire ? Sorry for the stupid, newbie question.

Thanks again, Marcusg

I have a 985 on the front of my TXT crawler with 40 series Mashers. I am using a Tekin Rebel 2, so BEC rating is not a problem. I ditched the servo saver long ago. It works alright, as long as you aren't in a bind. If you get the front tires against something and try to turn, forget it. It works a little better than the 645 I had on there. I would like to go to the Airtronics 94359s eventually. They are a bit pricey but 200 oz/in.

I run a Hitec 5955/front and 645/rear on my maxx based crawler. TR2 with no rx pack. The combo works fine for me.

Ok... The plug from the EVX that you plug into the receiver has 3 wires... White, red and black... What you do is take something pointy or sharp and lift the little tab that clips the red wire into the plug... Lift the little tab and pull the red wire right out... I do it that way in case I need to program the ESC again... You can cut it right off, but, if you need to reprogram, you'll have to splice it back together...

In the red circles are where you'll find the tabs I refer to... Just lift the middle one up and the red wire'll slide right out...

Leaving you with something that should look like this...

That way, you can reprogram without problems anywhere, anytime...

If you click the pics, you'll get a slightly bigger, not much tho', view... They were taken with my Logitech webcam...

IMHO,the only servo to run on a crawler.........Airtronics 359

I run 2 of these on both of our Twin crawlers and they work great. Both trucks are locked solid front and rear and running Moabs on one a Moab XL's on the other. I honestly believe they work better than the 1/4 scales I ran before I bought these. I'll never buy another servo.

I run the 5645 and am very happy with it. I say it's worth the extra $15 plus it comes with the alum servo arm and a plastic case that could be used to carry small parts to boot.
