Holmes Revolver Reviews and Experiences

The "Check My Math" thread was getting hijacked with the Holmes Revolver reviews, so I figured I would start a new thread to talk about these long awaited motors.

I got the Holmes Stubby about a month ago to replace the 1800kv ROC412 in my purely recreational Comp Crawler.

At 2200KV, the motor is noticably faster, and crazy full of torque. I dropped from a 20T pinion on the ROC412 to 12T, and it's still as fast, perhaps faster, than the ROC. I have no emperical data, though.

But, after running a dozen batteries through it, I am not convinced it's better than the ROC for me. It burns through batteries about 2x as fast, even with the tiniest 12T pinion made, the heat is now under control. I would chew through a 1000mah battery in a few minutes with a 16T pinion! As a purely recreational crawler, run time matters more than 90 grams of weight....

Beyond Run time It doesn't seem as smooth as the ROC when bound up and high torque is called for at low RPM. This is kind of my style, and it's not quite as refined as the ROC. I am going to put the ROC back in, and run a set of batteries through that for additional comparison.

My friend also bought a stubby at the same time for his Warthog-chassis'd Wraith-axled crawler, and on Sunday I went through 3 1000mah batteries to his 1.5 identical batteries (Venom 3S 1000mah). Maybe that's the worm gears? Maybe that's my driving style? Maybe that's his brand new batteries compared to my 6 month old ones. Regardless the Stubby is rocking that Warthog crawler of his. Plenty fast, and crawling under control.

New Fantasy...
Stubby motor with dual outputs, to pinion to pinion reductions on the losi Axles, for light-weight, direct drive 2.2 shafty crawler... That could be fun!

I have tried that with my Revolver S,-I think it was too fast and got too hot.
Also not smooth enough compared to brushed and did not handle fast forward to reverse action so well......

Since the Revolver is higher Kv it should spin faster, yes. I'm sure it's 2,000Kv and not 2,200Kv though...

The ROC is more powerful at the same voltage (the "business part" being about twice the size) and can therefore be expected to run with less load and more efficiency.

If loads of torque is what you need the Stubby ran at "low" voltage is clearly a lesser choice.

The worm drives can be expected to be the source for most (all?) of that difference, yes!

As noted I use 4S LiPo for my Stubby, giving it 33% more torque and ~75% more power to call for than if running it on 3S.
Hopefully I get a chance to measure the power consumption this weekend.

My experience is that the Revolver S does a much better job in my 1.9 SCX10 based scaler "thumbsup"
